Know your test

FACT vs. CPS: Which firefighter aptitude test are you taking?

Ontario firefighter applicants most commonly encounter one of two aptitude tests. They assess some overlapping abilities, but their content, administration and scoring are significantly different.

FACT

Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test

Commonly administered through OFAI or participating municipal recruitment processes

Administration

The FACT may be administered through different authorized testing processes. In Ontario, many candidates complete it through OFAI as the Stage One written assessment, while some municipalities or recruitment processes may arrange FACT testing directly.

Format
110 multiple-choice
Up to 3 hours
General Aptitude 45% / Personal Characteristics 55%
What it tests
  • Reading Ability — 15 questions
  • Mathematical Reasoning — 15 questions
  • Map Reading — 10 questions
  • Writing Ability — 10 questions
  • Personal Characteristics — 60 questions
Scoring

FACT results are issued as pass or fail. Candidates are not provided with a numerical score, and municipalities are generally only provided confirmation that the candidate passed.

FACT is standards-based: your objective is to demonstrate that you meet the required passing standard.
CPS

CPS Firefighter Entry-Level Test

Most commonly administered in Ontario through Firefighter Services of Ontario

Administration

The CPS Firefighter Entry-Level aptitude examination is published by CPS HR. In Ontario, candidates most commonly encounter it through Firefighter Services of Ontario, also known as FSO or FireOntario. Some municipalities may administer or arrange CPS testing through another process.

Format
Multiple-choice aptitude examination
Canadian CPS versions commonly contain approximately 100 questions
Testing time is commonly approximately 2 hours
Exact question counts, timing and administration rules can vary, so candidates must confirm the current instructions for their recruitment
What it tests
  • Understanding oral information
  • Reading comprehension
  • Mathematical ability
  • Mechanical aptitude
Scoring

FSO currently requires a minimum score of 70% to receive a passing grade. Candidates generally receive a percentage-based result. Depending on the municipality and recruitment process, aptitude scores may also be considered competitively or used to rank candidates — not simply treated as pass or fail.

Passing may not be enough: when a municipality evaluates or ranks aptitude scores, achieving a stronger result can improve your competitiveness.

What candidates say

Passed because of this.

Having the practice exam mode really helped me the most. Passed my aptitude test at FSO first try!

Aeden M.
Passed the CPS

I tried a couple other sites to prep for the FSO test but none of them matched the actual difficulty. Firefighter Academy was closest to the CPS questions on the test.

Lexi T.
Passed the CPS

I knew going in I needed to spend a lot more time on the math/reading comprehension. Was able to pass first attempt at OFAI.

Adam K.
Passed the FACT

Built for Canada

Original material written for Canadian FACT and CPS-style testing, not repurposed US content.

Why we built this

Built by people who've been in that room.

I built Firefighter Academy because we couldn't find prep that actually matched the Ontario tests we took. The books were outdated. The apps were for U.S only. The PDFs were unreliable. So I made what we wished we'd had. Realistic questions, real timing pressure, and clear analytics. Designed for Ontario hiring.
