FACT vs. CPS: Which firefighter aptitude test are you taking?
Ontario firefighter applicants most commonly encounter one of two aptitude tests. They assess some overlapping abilities, but their content, administration and scoring are significantly different.
Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test
Commonly administered through OFAI or participating municipal recruitment processes
The FACT may be administered through different authorized testing processes. In Ontario, many candidates complete it through OFAI as the Stage One written assessment, while some municipalities or recruitment processes may arrange FACT testing directly.
- Reading Ability — 15 questions
- Mathematical Reasoning — 15 questions
- Map Reading — 10 questions
- Writing Ability — 10 questions
- Personal Characteristics — 60 questions
FACT results are issued as pass or fail. Candidates are not provided with a numerical score, and municipalities are generally only provided confirmation that the candidate passed.
CPS Firefighter Entry-Level Test
Most commonly administered in Ontario through Firefighter Services of Ontario
The CPS Firefighter Entry-Level aptitude examination is published by CPS HR. In Ontario, candidates most commonly encounter it through Firefighter Services of Ontario, also known as FSO or FireOntario. Some municipalities may administer or arrange CPS testing through another process.
- Understanding oral information
- Reading comprehension
- Mathematical ability
- Mechanical aptitude
FSO currently requires a minimum score of 70% to receive a passing grade. Candidates generally receive a percentage-based result. Depending on the municipality and recruitment process, aptitude scores may also be considered competitively or used to rank candidates — not simply treated as pass or fail.

Passed because of this.
Having the practice exam mode really helped me the most. Passed my aptitude test at FSO first try!
I tried a couple other sites to prep for the FSO test but none of them matched the actual difficulty. Firefighter Academy was closest to the CPS questions on the test.
I knew going in I needed to spend a lot more time on the math/reading comprehension. Was able to pass first attempt at OFAI.

Built for Canada
Original material written for Canadian FACT and CPS-style testing, not repurposed US content.
Built by people who've been in that room.
I built Firefighter Academy because we couldn't find prep that actually matched the Ontario tests we took. The books were outdated. The apps were for U.S only. The PDFs were unreliable. So I made what we wished we'd had. Realistic questions, real timing pressure, and clear analytics. Designed for Ontario hiring.
