Reading Comprehension
Firefighters use a variety of ropes and knots for rescue, hoisting equipment, and securing loads. Ropes are classified by their construction and intended use. Life-safety rope is used exclusively for supporting human weight and must meet strict standards for strength and reliability. Utility rope is used for hoisting tools, cordoning off areas, and securing equipment, but is never used for life-safety applications once it has been used for a utility purpose. The tensile strength of a rope decreases significantly when a knot is tied in it. Most knots reduce the effective strength of a rope by 30 to 50 percent at the point of the knot, due to the tight bending radius creating stress concentrations in the fibres. For this reason, rope systems used in rescue operations are designed with a safety factor — meaning the rope is rated to hold several times the expected load. The bowline knot is widely used in fire service because it creates a fixed loop that will not slip under load and can be untied relatively easily even after bearing weight. The figure-eight follow-through is considered one of the strongest knots for attaching a rope to an anchor point.

What the FACT actually is
The FACT is a written aptitude and character assessment administered by the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI). It is used by many Ontario municipalities as an early stage in career firefighter recruitment, typically before physical testing and interviews. Candidates generally register and test through OFAI rather than through an individual department.
The exam is not a knowledge test about firefighting. It measures reading comprehension, applied mathematics, map reading, written communication, and personal characteristics such as judgement, reliability and teamwork. Departments use it as a common baseline so applicants can be compared on consistent criteria.

Test structure and sections
OFAI describes the FACT as 110 multiple-choice questions completed in up to three hours. The aptitude sections make up 50 questions; the remaining 60 form the personal characteristics questionnaire.

The FACT does not include dedicated memory, mechanical aptitude or spatial-reasoning sections. If you have been told to prepare for those, you are likely writing a different test.
Results
Scoring, results and retakes
Scoring is weighted roughly 45% toward the aptitude sections and 55% toward personal characteristics, and OFAI reports the outcome as pass/fail rather than as a published numeric score. That means there is no public cut-off to chase — the practical goal is to remove weak sections rather than optimise a number.
Retake eligibility, waiting periods between attempts and how long a certificate stays valid are set by OFAI and can change between recruitment cycles. Verify the current policy on OFAI's website before booking, particularly if you are timing a test around a specific department's application window.

How to prepare, section by section
Reading Ability
Practise pulling specific facts out of procedural text rather than skimming for gist. Read the question first, then locate the sentence that answers it — most errors come from inferring what the passage did not actually say.
Mathematical Reasoning
Rebuild fluency with fractions, percentages, unit conversions and rate problems without a calculator. Speed here comes from recognising the setup, not from arithmetic tricks.

Map Reading
Work on compass orientation and one-way restrictions. Trace the route with your finger and confirm each turn before choosing — reversed north/south errors are the most common failure.
Writing Ability
Review subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity, punctuation and concise sentence construction. Choose the option that is both grammatically correct and the least ambiguous.
Personal Characteristics
This section is not something you cram for. Answer honestly and consistently; contradictory answers across similar items are the main risk. Familiarity with the format simply removes surprise on test day.

- Treating the FACT like a general IQ test instead of preparing section by section.
- Practising memory, mechanical or spatial-reasoning questions that the OFAI FACT does not include.

- Guessing inconsistently on Personal Characteristics rather than answering steadily and honestly.
- Leaving map reading until last, when it is one of the fastest sections to improve.
