FACT Practice Test for B.C. Firefighter Applicants

Build the reading, math, writing, map-reading and workplace-judgment skills used in firefighter aptitude preparation. Start with original FACT-style questions and explanations you can learn from.

New Westminster's recruitment page recommends the FACT Candidate Orientation Guide. Other B.C. departments name different assessments. This guide helps you decide whether FACT-style preparation matches your recruitment before you choose a study plan.

Reading Comprehension

Firefighters use a variety of ropes and knots for rescue, hoisting equipment, and securing loads. Ropes are classified by their construction and intended use. Life-safety rope is used exclusively for supporting human weight and must meet strict standards for strength and reliability. Utility rope is used for hoisting tools, cordoning off areas, and securing equipment, but is never used for life-safety applications once it has been used for a utility purpose. The tensile strength of a rope decreases significantly when a knot is tied in it. Most knots reduce the effective strength of a rope by 30 to 50 percent at the point of the knot, due to the tight bending radius creating stress concentrations in the fibres. For this reason, rope systems used in rescue operations are designed with a safety factor — meaning the rope is rated to hold several times the expected load. The bowline knot is widely used in fire service because it creates a fixed loop that will not slip under load and can be untied relatively easily even after bearing weight. The figure-eight follow-through is considered one of the strongest knots for attaching a rope to an anchor point.

A rope originally purchased as life-safety rope is used for several months to hoist tools. It later passes a visual inspection. Based on the passage, how should it be classified for a victim-lowering operation?

  1. It may be restored to life-safety use because inspection confirms that no damage is visible
  2. It may support a person only if no knot is tied in the loaded section
  3. It may be used as the backup line but not as the main line
  4. It must remain utility rope because prior utility use excludes it from later life-safety service

Answers and step-by-step explanations appear in the interactive practice module above once you choose an option.

Provincial recruitment

FACT and firefighter recruitment in British Columbia

B.C. firefighter recruitment requirements vary by department and intake. A general reference to an aptitude test is not enough to identify it as FACT.

New Westminster The City's official firefighter recruitment page recommends the FPSI FACT Candidate Orientation Guide. Recruitment is currently closed. This is an official preparation recommendation; the exact assessment for the next intake should be confirmed when the City publishes new instructions.

Other B.C. recruitments Kelowna's 2025 application package names National Testing Network (NTN). The 2026 joint recruitment guide for Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich and Oak Bay names BL Associates. Those sources should not be interpreted as FACT requirements.

Check the current department posting and test invitation for the provider, assessment name, booking process, time limits and separate knowledge or physical testing. If the test is unnamed, ask the recruitment contact before buying a provider-specific preparation product.

Background

What the FACT actually is

The Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) is an FPSI assessment that includes reading, writing, applied math, map reading and personal-characteristics components.

FACT, NFST, CEB and NTN assessments are different products. Even tests from the same publisher can assess different content. Similar skill areas do not make the tests interchangeable.

Firefighter Academy's original FACT-style questions help you practise underlying aptitude skills. They do not reproduce live exam questions, department knowledge tests or a provider's personality assessment and scoring system.

Format

Test structure and sections

The FACT is published as 110 multiple-choice questions completed in up to three hours. The aptitude sections make up 50 questions; the remaining 60 form the personal characteristics questionnaire.

FACT sections and question counts
SectionQuestionsWhat it measures
Reading Ability15Interpreting written procedures, policies and reports under time pressure.
Mathematical Reasoning15Applied arithmetic, ratios, percentages, conversions and multi-step word problems.
Map Reading10Orientation, direction, routing and interpreting a street grid quickly.
Writing Ability10Grammar, clarity, sentence structure and accurate written communication.
Personal Characteristics60Judgement, teamwork, reliability and consistency of responses over the questionnaire.
Total110Up to three hours

The FACT does not include dedicated memory, mechanical aptitude or spatial-reasoning sections. If you have been told to prepare for those, you are likely writing a different test.

Results

Scoring, results and retakes

The FACT weights the aptitude sections and the personal-characteristics questionnaire together. The passing standard, retake rules and how long results stay valid are set by the testing provider and the hiring department, so check the official sources for your recruitment before booking.

Preparation

How to prepare, section by section

First, confirm your assessment. If FACT is named, read the official orientation guide alongside your department's instructions. If another test is named, use preparation matched to that test.

Establish a baseline with a practice session, then focus on the areas you find most difficult. Work on understanding passages and instructions, calculating accurately, writing clearly and following map directions.

For map questions, mark your starting point, track each turn and check restrictions before choosing a route. For math, write out the relationship between the quantities before calculating. For reading, support your answer with the passage rather than outside assumptions.

Add timed practice after you understand the methods. Review incorrect answers and practise the same skills again. Follow the calculator and reference-material rules in your test invitation, and answer personal-characteristics questions honestly.

Reading Ability

Practise pulling specific facts out of procedural text rather than skimming for gist. Read the question first, then locate the sentence that answers it — most errors come from inferring what the passage did not actually say.

Mathematical Reasoning

Rebuild fluency with fractions, percentages, unit conversions and rate problems without a calculator. Speed here comes from recognising the setup, not from arithmetic tricks.

Need focused help with calculations? Try the free FACT math practice test.

Map Reading

Work on compass orientation and one-way restrictions. Trace the route with your finger and confirm each turn before choosing — reversed north/south errors are the most common failure.

Writing Ability

Review subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity, punctuation and concise sentence construction. Choose the option that is both grammatically correct and the least ambiguous.

Personal Characteristics

This section is not something you cram for. Answer honestly and consistently; contradictory answers across similar items are the main risk. Familiarity with the format simply removes surprise on test day.

Pitfalls

Common preparation mistakes

  • Assuming every B.C. firefighter aptitude test is FACT.
  • Treating a FACT study-guide recommendation as confirmation of a future intake's exact exam.
  • Using an old recruitment package without checking for updated instructions.
  • Preparing for FACT when your invitation names NTN, BL Associates or another assessment.
  • Missing a route restriction or direction change in a map question.
  • Rushing through practice without reviewing why an answer was incorrect.

Comparison

FACT vs CPS: know which one you're writing

Preparing for the wrong format is the most expensive mistake an applicant can make. These two are frequently confused.

FACT

  • Administering provider set by the department
  • 110 multiple-choice questions
  • Up to three hours
  • Reading, math, map reading, writing, personal characteristics
  • No memory, mechanical or spatial-reasoning sections
  • Passing standard set by the testing provider

CPS firefighter tests

  • Published by CPS HR Consulting and used by various departments
  • Multiple test versions with different section mixes
  • Length varies by version
  • May include mechanical reasoning and memory/observation
  • Section content depends on the version selected by the department
  • Scoring approach set by the administering agency

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do B.C. fire departments use FACT?

New Westminster's official recruitment page recommends the FACT Candidate Orientation Guide. That supports a FACT preparation reference, but it does not establish a province-wide requirement or confirm the exact exam in the next intake.

Does New Westminster require FACT?

Its published recruitment page recommends the FACT guide. Recruitment is currently closed, so confirm the assessment named in the next application package or test invitation.

Does Kelowna use FACT?

Kelowna's 2025 application package specifies NTN testing. Use the latest Kelowna instructions to choose your preparation rather than assuming FACT applies.

Do Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich and Oak Bay use FACT?

Their 2026 joint recruitment guide names BL Associates for the written examination. That guide does not identify the exam as FACT.

Will FACT practice help with another aptitude test?

Some underlying skills, such as reading and math, may overlap. Question formats, assessed content and scoring can differ, so FACT practice should not be treated as complete preparation for another provider's assessment.

Are these official questions, and can I practise for free?

The questions are original practice content written by Firefighter Academy. Start with the free questions on this page; the app shows the additional practice options available with an account.

What score do I need, and how long are results valid?

Use the requirements published by the department and testing provider for your intake. Ontario OFAI passing and validity rules should not be assumed to apply in B.C.

Sources and methodology

Official recruitment and publisher sources were reviewed on October 7, 2026. New Westminster is listed because its recruitment page recommends the FACT guide. This does not confirm the exact assessment in a future intake. The department list is a sourced example, not an exhaustive inventory of all B.C. fire services.
