How to become a Abbotsford firefighter

  1. 1

    Check certificates before booking anything

Put expiry dates and outstanding renewals on one list. Course enrolment does not mean you hold the licence or certificate the application asks for.

  2. 2

Prepare the online application in advance

Have your resume, qualification evidence and employment history ready. The manual says the form must be completed in one sitting and warns that Safari is not supported.

  3. 3

    Plan fitness and travel together

Prepare for swimming and skills assessments as well as CPAT. Only the written stage offers online testing; later appointments require attendance in Abbotsford.

01

The department at a glance

Abbotsford’s career firefighter process includes a written competency assessment, CPAT and two separate occupational assessment days. Swimming, ladder work, mechanical tasks and an interview all have a place in selection. This guide explains what to prepare, which qualifications must already be issued and how the pay progresses.

More than firefighting

AFRS serves a mix of urban neighbourhoods, farms, industrial areas and airport infrastructure. Its October 2026 manual describes nine fire halls: five staffed by career firefighters and four by paid-on-call members. Medical calls, vehicle incidents and alarm activations make up its three largest call categories. This page covers career recruitment; the paid-on-call application route has different requirements.

Pay & working pattern

Fourth-year suppression firefighter — 2026 base salary · $128,964 per year

Effective January 1, 2026

Fourth-year base pay is $128,964 annually ($10,747/month or $58.85/hour), effective January 1, 2026. First-six-month pay is $90,276 annually. Overtime is additional. See the progression below for the other starting rates.

Suppression employees average 42 hours per week. The 2025–26 agreement also contains a 24-hour shift trial running from February 22, 2025 to February 19, 2027. Use the employment offer for the schedule that applies when you start.

Minimum qualifications

Have the required qualifications issued before you apply, with legible proof ready to upload. The current manual warns that claiming a certificate or licence you have not yet received can remove you from the process.

01Age and work eligibility
Be at least 19 when applying and legally entitled to work in Canada. The City includes citizens, permanent residents, landed immigrants and eligible work-visa holders.
02Education
Have a high-school diploma or accepted equivalent. The City lists GED, an undergraduate/applied degree, journeyman certification or two completed years of a recognized apprenticeship among its equivalents.
03Fire training
Complete accredited NFPA 1001 Level II, including HazMat Operations. Have the certification evidence ready with your application.
04Commercial driving
Hold Class 1, 2 or 3 with air brakes, or a provincial equivalent. An automatic-only restriction is accepted. Provide a good driving record and an abstract dated within the City’s stated 30-day window for the competition.
05Emergency medical licence
Hold a current First Responder licence with Spinal and AED, or a higher level such as EMR or PCP. Keep it valid throughout selection; a course certificate alone does not establish that a licence has been issued.
06Background and medical suitability
The City requires no criminal convictions or pending adult criminal charges, and the ability to obtain police/vulnerable-sector clearance. Medical and fitness screening take place later in selection.

Abbotsford firefighter salary and progression

The signed 2025–26 agreement sets the following annual base rates for suppression firefighters from January 1, 2026. Fourth-year pay is the headline figure; new recruits progress through the lower starting rates.

  • First six months: $90,276/year.
  • Second six months: $96,720/year.
  • Second year: $103,176/year.
  • Third year: $116,064/year.
  • Fourth year: $128,964/year.

These are 2026 base rates before overtime and other earnings. Additional service increments appear later in the agreement. The announced recruit class starts in 2027, so confirm the applicable rate in your offer rather than treating this wage schedule as a 2027 guarantee.

03

What strengthens your application

These help your application but do not replace a missing minimum qualification. Give dates, responsibilities and examples of the work you actually performed.

Practical and emergency-service experience

Trades, equipment work, volunteer firefighting, forestry, first-aid and paramedic experience can give you relevant examples. Explain the responsibility you held and how you worked with others.

Education and medical training

Post-secondary study, Red Seal trade training, extra fire courses and higher medical licensing are listed assets. Show how you have used the knowledge.

Community involvement and communication

The City values volunteering, languages, team participation and evidence of dependability. A specific example usually says more than calling yourself a strong team player.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Abbotsford currently names BL Associates for the written assessment. CPAT, swimming and practical skills are separate stages, so passing the written test is only one part of preparation.

Written assessment

BL Associates competency testing

The City’s current manual names the BL Associates Firefighter Competency Assessment and identifies online delivery. BLA assesses problem-solving abilities alongside character and interests; this is not the same exam as FACT, CPS or NTN FireTEAM. Review BLA’s candidate guidance, prepare the required computer setup and answer personal questionnaires honestly.

Physical ability

CPAT

CPAT is eight events completed in sequence within 10 minutes 20 seconds. The City’s current manual gives full credit at this stage for a current, valid CPAT certificate. Confirm that your certificate meets the competition’s requirements before booking another test. The public booking page lists $350 plus tax for a CPAT session and $75 plus tax per walk-through; those are booking prices, not a complete recruitment-fee quote.

Occupational assessment · Day 1

Swimming, running, ladders and mechanics

The October 2026 manual lists a 100-metre swim, five minutes of treading water, a 20-metre shuttle run to level 8, a 100-foot aerial climb, a 35-foot ladder extension fixed to a wall and a mechanical skills assessment. Allow roughly four to six hours and bring photo identification. CPAT does not replace this stage.

Occupational assessment · Day 2

Interview, presentations and skill stations

The current recruitment page lists interviews, presentations and skill stations for Day 2. Allow four to six hours. Prepare examples of teamwork, judgment and service, and practise explaining your actions clearly. The City has not published a specific interview format or question bank.

Written test preparation

Practise the underlying aptitude skills

Our FACT practice offers independent exercises in shared skills such as reading and math. FACT is a different test; this is not a BL Associates simulation or personality-test answer guide. Start with BLA’s official candidate information for Abbotsford’s assessment.

05

The recruitment process

The City’s career process has seven stages. Each stage must be passed before advancing. Use the announced dates earlier in this guide to plan for the 2026–27 competition.

  1. 1

    Application and screening

Complete the online application during an advertised intake. Upload the requested documents and resume, then check that the submission is complete.

Have qualifications issued before claiming them.

  2. 2

    BL Associates written assessment

Invited candidates complete the Firefighter Competency Assessment online. Follow the registration, payment and equipment instructions in your invitation.

A recent BLA result may be transferable, subject to BLA and City rules.

  3. 3

    CPAT

Complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test, or provide a current valid certificate that the City accepts.

Confirm certificate requirements before paying for another test.

  4. 4

Occupational assessment days 1 and 2

Day 1 tests swimming, running, ladders and mechanical skills. Day 2 includes interviews, presentations and skill stations. Both require attendance in Abbotsford.

Allow four to six hours for each assessment day.

  5. 5

    References and police checks

The City checks employment references and police information, including vulnerable-sector clearance. Arrange referees who directly supervised your work.

Candidates pay the applicable police-check fees.

  6. 6

    Medical assessment

Attend the City’s medical and fitness screening with its third-party provider. This assessment takes place in person.

The current manual states there is no candidate charge for this stage.

  7. 7

    Fire Chief interview and selection

Shortlisted candidates meet the Fire Chief before final selection. Successful candidates may receive an offer and enter recruit training.

The manual describes a one-year probation with evaluations at eight weeks, six months and eleven months.

Common questions

Guidance for Abbotsford applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Abbotsford hiring career firefighters?

As of our November 3, 2026 review, the City has announced applications for November 9–27, 2026. That window has not opened yet. Check the City’s firefighter opportunities page and careers portal for the live posting; future intakes may use different dates.

How much do Abbotsford firefighters make?

The signed 2025–26 agreement lists fourth-year suppression firefighter base pay of $128,964 a year from January 1, 2026. First-six-month pay is $90,276. Later service increments and overtime can change earnings. These rates do not confirm the wage for a 2027 start.

What written test does Abbotsford use?

The October 2026 manual names the BL Associates Firefighter Competency Assessment, with online delivery. BLA includes problem-solving and character or interest measures. Do not assume FACT, CPS or FireTEAM practice reproduces this assessment.

Can I transfer an existing BLA score?

BLA offers score transfers within 12 months, subject to its transfer rules and the receiving department’s requirements. Request a transfer early and confirm that Abbotsford has accepted it. A past result is not automatic entry to the next stage.

Do I need CPAT if I already have a certificate?

The current City manual gives full credit at the CPAT stage for a current valid CPAT certificate. Check its acceptance and validity requirements for your competition before booking another test. The occupational assessment days still apply.

What is the Abbotsford firefighter swim test?

Day 1 of the October 2026 process includes a 100-metre swim and five minutes of treading water. It also includes a shuttle run to level 8, ladder tasks and a mechanical assessment. CPAT does not replace these activities.

Is the interview an MMI?

The City lists interviews, presentations and skill stations on the second occupational assessment day, followed later by a Fire Chief interview. The current public material does not confirm an MMI format. Prepare clear examples of teamwork, judgment, safety and service without relying on a rumoured question format.

Can I apply from outside British Columbia?

The career qualifications accept a provincial equivalent to the required commercial licence. Read the competition’s documentation rules and allow for travel: the written assessment is online, but later testing requires attendance in Abbotsford. Confirm any licence conversion or start-date conditions directly with the City.

What should I budget for recruitment?

Budget for qualification renewals, testing, police checks and travel. The City’s public CPAT booking page lists $350 plus tax for a test and $75 plus tax per walk-through. Those prices do not cover every recruitment expense. The current manual says the medical assessment has no cost to candidates; use invitation instructions for other assessment fees.
