How to become a Barrie firefighter

  1. 1

    Check eligibility before spending

Compare your education, fire certificates and EMR training with the current posting. Mark each item complete, missing or needing clarification.

  2. 2

    Build a certificate calendar

Record OFAI test dates, expiry dates and the City’s required validity date. Leave room for result uploads, retests and limited swim availability.

  3. 3

    Prepare evidence, not slogans

Choose examples of teamwork, service, safety and learning from your own experience. Explain your decisions and the result clearly.

01

The department at a glance

Build a clear plan for a career with Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES). This guide brings together qualifications, OFAI testing, salary progression and the selection process, with practical steps you can work on between recruitment campaigns.

More than firefighting

Barrie recruits career firefighters into fifth-class positions. Frontline work spans fire suppression, medical response, technical rescue, hazardous materials and marine incidents. Prepare to explain both your operational readiness and how you will serve residents, support your crew and keep learning.

Pay & working pattern

First-class firefighter — annual base · $123,197 per year

02

Minimum qualifications

Use the latest City posting as your eligibility checklist. The 2026 competition separated minimum qualifications from conditions completed later in the process; the timing below reflects that campaign and may change in a future intake.

01Age, work eligibility and education
The 2026 minimums were age 18+, legal entitlement to work in Canada and an Ontario secondary-school diploma or academic equivalent.
02Firefighter and hazardous-materials certification
NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II, plus NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness or equivalent, with the accreditation specified in the posting: IFSAC or Pro Board.
03Emergency Medical Responder training
Completion of an EMR course was a minimum qualification. Do not assume a basic first-aid certificate meets that requirement; resolve equivalency questions with City recruitment before applying.
04OFAI certificates at the required milestone
The 2026 employment conditions required Stages One, Two and Three plus Swim, valid by January 31, 2027. Future campaigns may set a different date.
05DZ licence and driving history
An unrestricted Ontario D licence with Z endorsement was required at conditional offer. The abstract had to be dated within 30 days; six or more demerit points made a candidate ineligible.
06Employment screening
Conditional-offer checks included a candidate-paid vulnerable sector check, dated no more than 30 days before the offer, and City-designated medical and psychological assessments.
03

What strengthens your application

Meeting the minimums makes you eligible for consideration. Your application becomes stronger when it shows specific evidence of useful skills and sound judgment.

Relevant practical experience

Emergency services, dispatch, military service, construction, skilled trades and heavy-equipment work were identified as assets. Show the safety procedures and responsibilities you handled.

Service and teamwork

Use examples of respectful public contact, collaboration, confidentiality and resolving difficult situations. State what you personally did and what you learned.

Organized, adaptable work habits

Connect your experience to communication, problem solving and managing competing tasks. Describe how you check your work and respond when priorities change.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Barrie’s 2026 competition required OFAI Stages One, Two and Three plus the swim test, with certificates valid by January 31, 2027. This was an employment condition. Plan backwards from the date in your own competition rather than assuming every Ontario department uses the same deadline.

STAGE ONE

FACT aptitude and character assessment

OFAI uses the Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT). Prepare reading, practical math, map interpretation and writing, alongside an honest approach to the character section. It is a separate assessment from Barrie’s rapid assessment.

STAGE TWO

Vision, hearing and treadmill assessments

Stage Two includes vision, hearing and the Encapsulated Treadmill Test (ETT). Review the current OFAI forms and medical instructions before booking. The ETT has a shorter certificate life than the vision and hearing assessments.

STAGE THREE

Physical aptitude and technical skills

Stage Three covers the Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests (FPAT) and Firefighter Technical Skills Assessment. Train progressively, review official task instructions and allow time for recovery and any reassessment.

SWIM

Barrie required the additional swim test

OFAI’s swim assessment is recruitment-dependent, and Barrie included it in 2026. It involves 10 minutes of unassisted vertical treading followed by a 100-metre swim within five minutes. Review the current guide and booking confirmation.

PLAN AHEAD

Keep certificates valid through the City’s date

OFAI lists FACT, vision and hearing validity at two years; ETT at six months; FPAT, technical skills and swim at one year. Check each certificate individually and confirm current provider rules before paying for a booking. Budget for testing, vision appointments, EMR training, DZ licensing, travel and possible retests.

Written test preparation

Practise for the OFAI FACT

Build familiarity with reading, math, maps and writing using original practice questions. Firefighter Academy is independent; practice results are not OFAI certification.

05

The recruitment process

The 2026 process moved from application screening to a rapid assessment, then an interview and employment checks. The stages below summarize that published sequence. An invitation at one stage does not guarantee an offer.

  1. 1

Apply online and pass the initial review

Submit the résumé, cover letter and application answers requested by the City. The Selection Committee reviews eligible applications.

In 2026, extra documents were not reviewed and emailed applications were not accepted. Follow the current instructions exactly.

  2. 2

    Attend the rapid assessment

Selected applicants complete a 20-minute assessment with the Selection Committee.

The published notice did not identify this as an MMI or disclose a question count. Use your invitation for the actual format and instructions.

  3. 3

    Complete the selection interview

Candidates selected from the rapid assessment advance to a separate committee interview.

Practise concise, truthful examples of safety, teamwork, judgment, public service and learning from feedback.

  4. 4

    Conditional offer, references and assessments

The published sequence proceeds to conditional offers, reference checks, then medical and psychological assessments.

Track the dates on your DZ licence, driver’s abstract, vulnerable sector check and OFAI certificates. Prepare documents when requested.

  5. 5

Gear fitting, formal offer and start

Successful candidates attend uniform and bunker-gear fitting, fulfil employment conditions and receive a formal offer.

The 2026 competition anticipated a March 1, 2027 start. That date belongs to that intake and is not a prediction for future recruitment.

How to prepare a stronger Barrie application

The following is preparation advice, not a published scoring rubric. Aim to make your qualifications easy to verify and your examples easy to follow.

  • Create a qualification-to-evidence sheet. For each requirement, record the exact credential, issuer, completion date and where it appears in your application. Resolve name or date mismatches before submitting.
  • Make your résumé concrete. Replace “team player” with a brief example of a shared task, your responsibility, the safety considerations and the result. Keep the same dates and job titles across all forms.
  • Research the community and role. Be ready to connect Barrie’s urban and waterfront setting to the work described by BFES, including marine response, public education and service to residents and visitors.
  • Practise a short opening and several adaptable examples. Record yourself explaining a difficult decision, a mistake you corrected and a time you supported someone. State your own actions without taking credit for the whole team.
  • Rehearse the rapid assessment under a 20-minute overall clock. Practise listening, answering the actual question and stopping when your point is complete. Use the invitation’s instructions for any individual answer limits.
  • Plan the logistics. Check travel time, clothing, identification, booking instructions and contact details. Keep reference information current and schedule training around recovery and work commitments.
06

Your application checklist

Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.

Barrie recruitment history and the next intake

The latest verified fifth-class firefighter competition is closed. Use this timeline to understand the last campaign, not to predict the next one. Barrie’s historical FAQ describes recruitment as dependent on staffing needs and budget approval.

  • September 16, 2026 — posting PB-26-02 opened for permanent full-time fifth-class firefighters.
  • October 14, 2026, 4:30 p.m. — application deadline; the City confirms the recruitment window is closed.
  • January 31, 2027 — required OFAI certificate validity date stated in that competition.
  • March 1, 2027 — anticipated employment start for that intake, subject to completing all conditions.
  • Next intake — no future application window announced in the official sources reviewed October 28, 2026. Check the City’s firefighter career page for new notices.

Common questions

Guidance for Barrie applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Barrie hiring career firefighters now?

The City’s 2026 fifth-class firefighter application window closed October 14, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. No future application window was announced in the sources reviewed on October 28, 2026. Check the City’s firefighter career page for current notices.

What is a Barrie firefighter’s salary?

First-class annual base pay is $123,197 effective July 1, 2026. Fifth-class entry pay is $73,918. The salary progression section shows the intervening classes; overtime, experience pay and benefits are separate.

Do I need OFAI certificates before applying to Barrie?

For the 2026 intake, Stages One, Two and Three plus Swim were employment conditions, with certificates valid by January 31, 2027. They were not listed among the minimum application qualifications. Read each new posting for its own timing.

Does Barrie use FACT, CPS or NTN?

Barrie’s 2026 pathway required OFAI Stage One, which is the FACT assessment. Do not substitute CPS or NTN preparation for the testing instructions in your competition.

What is the Barrie rapid assessment?

The City describes a 20-minute session with its Selection Committee before a separate interview. Its public notice does not specify an MMI, question count or scoring rubric. Your invitation should govern how you prepare and attend.

Does Barrie require EMR and a DZ licence?

The 2026 posting listed completion of an EMR course as a minimum qualification. An unrestricted Ontario D licence with Z endorsement was required at conditional offer. These are different milestones; plan for both.

Is the OFAI swim test required for Barrie?

Yes, it was included in Barrie’s 2026 employment conditions. Swim is an additional OFAI assessment used when a department requests it, so candidates should not assume Stages One to Three alone are sufficient.

Does Barrie recruit every year?

There is no guaranteed annual intake. The City’s historical recruitment FAQ says campaigns depend on operational need and budget approval. A past posting date is useful history, not a reliable prediction of the next opening.
