The department at a glance
Want to become a Brampton firefighter? Build your plan around the exact competition—not a generic Ontario checklist. This guide covers career suppression recruitment, the evidence you need to organize and how to prepare between hiring rounds. Brampton’s public pages contain some overlapping and inconsistent instructions, especially around OFAI and licence timing. We identify those differences so you know what to verify before booking tests or submitting documents. The October 2026 application window is closed; its details are historical examples, not an invitation to apply.
More than firefighting
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services combines emergency response with prevention, rescue and public education in Peel Region. City planning documents describe 14 operating fire stations; Station 215 is a separate construction project. For candidates, the role calls for more than physical readiness: think about patient communication, careful equipment checks, learning from feedback and working respectfully with people whose experiences differ from your own. Prepare examples of dependable routine work as well as decisions made under pressure.
Pay & working pattern
Top firefighter classification — published 2026 annual rate · $123,493 per year
Effective October 6, 2026
Probationary starting pay: $74,096 annually. The October 2026 posting lists a $74,096–$123,493 annual range with increases over a four-year classification process. The headline uses the top published classification rate; a separate first-class wage-grid entry was not verified. The displayed date is the posting date, not a confirmed wage-change date. Overtime and additional compensation are separate.
The 2026 posting described an average 42-hour work week and rotating 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Recruit training follows a separate schedule; confirm it in your offer.
Brampton firefighter salary and progression
The October 2026 posting gives a starting annual salary of $74,096 and a classification range of $74,096–$123,493, with annual increases over a four-year classification process. These are published 2026 figures, not an estimate from individual Sunshine List earnings. The upper end is a later classification rate, not the starting salary for a new recruit.
For budgeting, distinguish annual base pay from take-home pay and actual earnings in a partial year. Confirm each intermediate step, advancement conditions, overtime, benefits and pension deductions in the applicable agreement and offer. We have not filled missing steps by assuming percentages. The pay card’s date identifies the October 6 posting used as evidence; the posting does not establish the exact date a wage increase took effect.
Minimum qualifications
Use the current posting as the final checklist. These items summarize the archived October 2026 competition; future requirements and the dates for meeting them can change. Check the complete official wording, not just this summary.
- 01Education and eligibility
- OSSD or equivalent; age 18+; legal entitlement to work in Canada.
- 02Firefighter and HazMat certification
- NFPA 1001 I/II and NFPA 1072/472 Awareness/Operations, with Pro Board or IFSAC proof or accepted equivalency.
- 03First aid and CPR
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C.
- 04Driving
- Unrestricted DZ or MTO-recognized equivalent and an acceptable driving record. Do not rely on older six-month grace wording.
- 05Fitness and clinical evidence
- The October posting named OFAI Stage Two or York University Firefighter Fitness Testing. Verify the next competition’s exact list.
- 06Water qualification
- NFPA 1006 Surface Water Rescue Level II (2013) or Operations (2021), or a current OFAI swim certificate.
- 07Screening
- Satisfactory police record check with vulnerable-sector screening; follow the current timing instructions.

What strengthens your application
Additional experience is most useful when you can explain how you applied it. The archived posting valued a broad range of education, practical work and service experience. Assets strengthen an application but do not replace mandatory evidence.
Education and practical experience
Post-secondary education, trades, emergency services and heavy-vehicle experience were beneficial. Explain your own responsibilities and results.
Medical, rescue and safety learning
EMR, lifeguarding, technical rescue and occupational safety training appeared among the assets. Show what the learning helps you do safely.
Community service and languages
Service experience and multilingual ability can support work with Brampton’s diverse community. Describe how you adapted your communication to a person’s needs.
Professional judgement
Prepare a real example of accepting direction, correcting a mistake or supporting a colleague under pressure. Explain the result and what changed afterward. These are independent preparation suggestions, not predicted interview questions.
Aptitude & physical testing
Separate the municipality’s required components from the testing provider’s general certificate rules. Brampton’s page lists Stage Two or York fitness in one place and Stages One and Two in another. The next posting and written candidate instructions must settle the exact pathway.
Resolve the OFAI wording before booking
The City’s page is not fully consistent about Stage One. The archived October posting explicitly lists Stage Two or York fitness. Do not interpret a fitness alternative as proof that every written assessment is waived, or assume all three OFAI stages are mandatory. Follow the specific competition and written clarification.
FACT when Stage One is required
OFAI Stage One is FACT: 110 multiple-choice items in up to three hours, combining reading, mathematics, maps and writing with personal characteristics. Use the official guide for the assessment format. Practise the underlying skills and review mistakes; do not substitute memorized answers for honest responses.
Track clinical results separately
OFAI issues separate hearing, vision and ETT certificates. Hearing and vision have two-year validity; ETT has six-month validity. Municipal acceptance dates may differ. Vision paperwork is completed through your eye-care professional and submitted for OFAI review, so leave processing time.
A swim course is not automatically equivalent
The accepted credential must match the posting. OFAI currently describes 10 minutes of unassisted treading followed by 100 metres within five minutes, with one-year certification. Do not assume another employer’s tread-water test, a general swim course or lifeguard qualification replaces the specified credential.
Written test preparation
Preparing for OFAI Stage One?
If your competition requires FACT, build the underlying skills with original practice and explanations. Independent practice does not replace an official assessment or issue certification.

Prepare for Ontario DZ knowledge testsThe recruitment process
Brampton’s published roadmap currently describes the stages below. Treat it as a planning reference: your invitation determines the actual format, timing and additional assessments. Progression through a stage is not a guaranteed job offer.
- 1
Apply online
Complete the competition’s application
The City requires a questionnaire and supporting documents. Keep the confirmation email and final attachments; a saved profile alone is not a submitted application.
- 2
Resume screening
Make the evidence easy to assess
Use clear dates and accurate descriptions. Distinguish certification from course attendance and describe volunteer service accurately.
- 3
Pre-screening interview
Published roadmap: 20 minutes
The current City roadmap describes a two-person panel. Prepare a concise account of your background, responsibilities and interest in the work. Follow the actual invitation.
- 4
Situational behavioural interview
Published roadmap: one hour
The roadmap describes a structured interview. Organize examples around the situation, your actions, result and lesson. Be ready to explain decisions without guessing a preferred answer.
- 5
Decision making
Assessment against organizational goals
The City describes further assessment after the interview threshold. Meeting minimum requirements or passing an interview does not guarantee selection.
- 6
Pre-employment checks
Qualifications, references and screening
The roadmap names vulnerable-sector screening, education, references and other employment checks. Brief references and wait for the requested document timing.
- 7
Offer
Read every condition and deadline
The roadmap allows an offer or an 18-month conditional offer. This is not a blanket permission to apply without mandatory qualifications: only written terms establish what may remain outstanding.
- 8
Recruit training
Published roadmap: 16 weeks
Training is described at 425 Chrysler Drive. Confirm the cohort schedule, attendance expectations and employment conditions in your own offer.
Make your Brampton application complete and easy to review
The archived 2026 competition required certificates and supporting documents in one PDF no larger than 5 MB, uploaded in the Cover Letter section. The questionnaire and tailored cover letter/resume were also part of the application. If the next portal or posting changes the attachment instructions, follow those new instructions. Do not assume the field label alone explains what belongs in it.
Create a document checklist before compressing anything. Include the evidence requested for education, fire qualifications, testing, first aid and licensing. Check that certification seals, names and dates remain readable. Open the final PDF on another device, verify page order and keep a local copy with the submission confirmation. In the resume, connect responsibilities to a concrete contribution. Clear evidence of safe work, service and learning is more useful than a string of broad adjectives.
Your application checklist
Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.
Recruitment history and preparing for the next opening
Reviewed October 27, 2026. Competition 107309 / requisition 580 advertised 14 positions and an October 6–26 application window. That window is closed. Screening and interviews may continue after applications close; this does not reopen the competition. No next application window or future class date was verified. Use the City’s firefighter page and jobs portal for new announcements.
Brampton’s Station 215 page still describes a construction project and a Q4 2026 completion target. A project target is not proof that a station is operating or that another recruitment is imminent. Between rounds, keep a credential tracker, improve any prerequisite gaps, record examples while they are fresh and maintain sustainable physical preparation. Learn about the community you would serve so your interest in BFES is specific and informed.

Common questions
Guidance for Brampton applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Brampton hiring firefighters now?
The October 2026 application window closed October 26. At our October 27 review, no next opening date was verified. A selection process may continue after applications close; check the City’s jobs portal for a new competition.
Does Brampton require all OFAI stages?
Do not assume that. The October posting and parts of the City page list Stage Two or York fitness, while another FAQ mentions Stage One too. Read the current competition and candidate instructions for the exact components.
Which aptitude test applies?
OFAI Stage One is FACT when required. Fitness testing and written aptitude are different assessments. The guide’s FACT practice link is relevant only if your pathway includes that test; it does not establish a Brampton requirement.
Does my swimming course count?
Use the exact credential list in the posting. Ask about an alternative before relying on it. A course accepted by another city—or a candidate-specific exception—is not evidence of general acceptance in Brampton.
Can I obtain my DZ after hiring?
An older part of the City page mentions six months after hire, but the October 2026 posting required a valid unrestricted DZ or recognized equivalent. Follow the competition-specific requirement and do not presume a grace period.
What was the application PDF rule?
The archived competition required obtained certificates and supporting documents combined in one PDF of no more than 5 MB, uploaded in the Cover Letter section. Follow updated portal instructions next time; review the application section for practical checks.
How many interviews are there?
The current public roadmap includes a pre-screening interview followed by a structured behavioural interview. The actual invitation governs the format, timing and any extra assessments.
What do Brampton firefighters earn?
The archived 2026 posting listed $74,096 starting annual pay and a classification range up to $123,493, with annual increases over four years. Check the current agreement and offer for the rate applicable to a later intake.
Does Brampton have volunteer firefighter positions?
The City’s recruitment FAQ says it does not offer volunteer firefighter opportunities within BFES. This guide covers career suppression hiring. Community service elsewhere can still provide useful experience.
