How to become a Caledon firefighter
- 1
Choose the career recruitment stream
Read the full-time job posting. The volunteer page’s local-residency radius, G-licence entry route and information sessions belong to a different application process.
- 2
Check qualifications and document dates
List your fire certifications, accreditation, DZ licence, first aid and education. Identify missing items before spending money on assessments.
- 3
Prepare for tests and interviews together
Build FACT skills, maintain fitness and practise explaining real examples of teamwork and judgment. Follow the Town’s assessment invitation for booking instructions.
The department at a glance
Prepare for a career with Caledon Fire and Emergency Services (CFES). This guide covers full-time firefighter qualifications, written and physical testing, interviews and pay, with practical advice you can use between hiring campaigns. Caledon operates a composite service with career and volunteer firefighters; each recruitment stream has its own rules.
More than firefighting
Caledon combines growing communities with rural and agricultural areas. Career firefighters respond to fires, medical calls, collisions and technical rescues, while also maintaining equipment, completing reports, training and delivering fire-prevention education. Strong applicants can explain how they will contribute to both emergency response and everyday service.
Pay & working pattern
First-class firefighter — reported 2025 base · $118,600 per year
Effective July 1, 2025
Reported July 1, 2025 arbitration rate (HR News Canada, September 23, 2025). A newer 2026 base rate and current recruit rate were not verified. Excludes overtime, recognition pay and benefits.
Career suppression work involves shifts, ongoing training and physically demanding duties. The filed 2019–2022 collective agreement sets an average 42-hour workweek for suppression firefighters. Confirm the current station assignment and shift rotation with the Town.
Caledon firefighter salary
Compare annual base salary separately from overtime, service-related premiums and benefits. These figures do not represent take-home pay.
- First class — $118,600 per year, effective July 1, 2025 (reported arbitration rate).
- Experienced career hires — the 2025 posting allowed previous full-time classification to be recognized, up to first class. Confirm your classification with the Town.
Source: HR News Canada’s September 23, 2025 report on the 2023–2025 arbitration award. A newer 2026 grid was not verified. The older filed agreement describes four-year progression to first class, subject to examinations; confirm current progression and any experience credit with the Town.
Minimum qualifications
The minimums below summarize the Town’s 2025 full-time employer posting, preserved by the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs. Use them to identify gaps, then compare every item and document deadline with the next live posting.
- 01Age and secondary education
- The 2025 career posting required age 18+ at application and Grade 12 or academic equivalent. Applicants with international credentials needed a recognized credential evaluation report.
- 02Firefighter I and II certification
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II with Pro Board or IFSAC proof was required before applying. The posting also described an Ontario legacy-firefighter recognition route; confirm acceptable evidence directly with the Town.
- 03Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
- The 2025 posting specified NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072 Awareness and Operations, with Pro Board or IFSAC proof. Awareness alone does not match that listed requirement.
- 04Unrestricted Ontario DZ licence
- The career posting required a valid DZ licence in good standing with no more than three demerit points. Follow the current posting for the abstract date and upload instructions.
- 05Current Standard First Aid and CPR C
- These were the 2025 medical-response credentials. The 2024 posting also referred to BLS, so check the exact certification level and expiry rules for your own campaign.
- 06Assessment and screening requirements
- Candidates had to pass the Town’s selection assessments, behavioural/competency interviews and a Level 3 vulnerable sector check. Documentation and testing were at the candidate’s expense.
Career and volunteer recruitment in Caledon
Caledon’s composite service offers two distinct paths. The public page titled “Recruitment” describes volunteers, while permanent full-time firefighter vacancies are advertised through the Town’s career job board.
- Career route: use the full-time job posting for certification, licensing, testing and screening requirements. The reviewed 2025 posting required pre-existing fire certification and a DZ licence.
- Volunteer route: the Town lists age 18+, a full G licence with no more than three demerit points, attendance at an information session, screening and residence within 10 kilometres of a station. Previous fire experience and NFPA certification are assets rather than entry requirements on that page.
- Apply to each stream separately. Volunteer service can build relevant experience, but it does not guarantee a full-time offer or replace the qualifications in a career posting.
What strengthens your application
The 2025 career posting expressly preferred active career or volunteer firefighters. Other preparation below helps you demonstrate the communication, teamwork and judgment described by the Town; it is not an additional formal eligibility requirement.
Active firefighting experience
The 2025 posting preferred candidates currently serving as career or volunteer firefighters. Describe your actual responsibilities, training and contribution without disclosing confidential incident information.
Clear communication and crew teamwork
Choose examples of following direction, sharing workload, communicating accurately and helping a team resolve a problem. Explain what you personally did.
Practical judgment and learning habits
Show how you recognize risk, ask for help, protect confidentiality and learn from feedback. Prepare examples from employment, volunteering or training that you can discuss honestly.
Aptitude & physical testing
Caledon’s published process has changed between campaigns. The 2024 notice used OFAI Candidate Testing Services, including FACT. The 2025 notice listed Town-scheduled written, cognitive, practical, performance, swimming and York University fitness assessments. FACT is the written-test preparation focus here; follow your invitation for who administers it and which certificates are accepted.
FACT preparation and Town instructions
Caledon’s 2024 recruitment used OFAI Stage One FACT. The 2025 employer notice described a written test and cognitive assessments without naming the test publisher. Use FACT practice to build reading, math, map-reading and writing skills; follow the current invitation for format, administrator, timing and fees.
Town-scheduled York assessment
The 2025 notice named the York University firefighter fitness assessment and said the Town would schedule it. Wait for the Town’s instructions before independently buying a certificate or assuming an OFAI physical result will substitute.
Prepare for more than a written exam
The 2025 notice included practical, performance and swimming assessments. It did not publish a swim distance, cutoff time or complete task list. Review the invitation, train progressively and practise technical tasks through qualified instruction.
Do not carry old booking rules into a new intake
The 2024 campaign required OFAI Stages One to Three certificates by interview, maintained through signed offer, and included Swim. The 2025 notice described a different assessment pathway. Confirm what must be valid, when and through which provider before booking.
Written test preparation
Build your FACT written-test skills
Practise reading, mathematical reasoning, maps and writing with original questions and explanations. Firefighter Academy is independent; practice does not replace any Town test or required certificate.

Prepare for the Ontario DZ knowledge testsThe recruitment process
Use this as a preparation map rather than a fixed timetable. The 2025 posting required successful assessments and behavioural/competency interviews but did not publish a complete stage-by-stage order. The detailed MMI format described below is documented in the archived 2024 employer notice.
- 1
Submit the required application
Match your qualifications to the live posting and provide exactly the requested documents.
Check the closing time, file names, certification evidence and abstract instructions. Save the submission confirmation.
- 2
Complete invited selection assessments
The 2025 posting listed written, cognitive, practical, performance, swim and York fitness assessments.
The public notice did not establish a complete order or pass marks. Your invitation governs scheduling, preparation and permitted equipment.
- 3
Prepare for MMI and competency interviews
The archived 2024 process used an MMI followed by a panel interview. The 2025 posting referred to behavioural/competency interviews.
The earlier MMI had five interview questions and three practical assessments, five minutes per station, lasting about an hour overall. Treat this as documented history, not a promise for the next campaign.
- 4
Provide screening and qualification evidence
Complete the references, vulnerable sector check and other employment conditions the Town requests.
The 2024 notice specified three satisfactory supervisory references. The 2025 notice required a Level 3 vulnerable sector check. Confirm current document deadlines and requirements.
- 5
Confirm the offer and recruit-training requirements
Review your classification, conditions, start date and training instructions before making employment or travel commitments.
The 2025 competition projected a January 2026 start. A past class date does not establish the next intake.
Caledon MMI and interview preparation
The archived 2024 employer notice confirms an MMI followed by a panel interview. This is useful evidence about Caledon’s past process, while the 2025 posting used broader behavioural/competency wording. Prepare flexible skills and follow the format in your invitation.
- Historical MMI: five interview questions and three practical assessments, five minutes at each station, about one hour overall. The specific questions and practical tasks were not published in the reviewed notice.
- For a scenario, identify the immediate concern, explain your first action and reasoning, communicate with the appropriate person, then describe how you would follow through. Stay within your training and authority.
- For a behavioural question, use one real example: situation, your responsibility, what you did, the result and what you learned. Spend most of your answer on your own decisions and actions.
- Practise speaking for up to five minutes, then review whether you answered the question directly. Aim for a complete answer with a clear ending rather than filling time or relying on a memorized script.
Original practice scenarios — these are Firefighter Academy examples, not Caledon interview questions or a published scoring rubric:
- Equipment readiness: During a routine equipment check, you notice a fault and a teammate suggests leaving it until tomorrow. Explain how you would assess the concern, communicate it and follow the reporting process.
- Public service: A resident is frustrated during a fire-prevention conversation and says the crew is wasting their time. Explain how you would listen, address the concern respectfully and communicate the safety purpose.
- Learning and accountability: You realize you misunderstood an instruction during training. Explain what you would do immediately, how you would correct the issue and how you would prevent the same mistake.
Your application checklist
Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.
Caledon recruitment history and future openings
Past recruitment activity helps explain the service’s development. It does not establish a fixed annual career-hiring schedule. No firefighter opening appeared in the Town’s live job-board search on October 28, 2026.
- May 27, 2024 — deadline in the archived full-time notice that described OFAI certification and the MMI/panel interview format.
- June 30, 2025, noon — deadline in the reviewed career employer posting; it projected a January 2026 start and described Town-scheduled assessments.
- May 1, 2026 — the Town celebrated 24 career recruits graduating, its largest full-time recruit class, after approximately four months and more than 600 hours of training.
- Next career intake — no future application window verified. Monitor the Town’s job board; the volunteer programme’s annual recruitment schedule is separate.

Common questions
Guidance for Caledon applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Caledon hiring full-time firefighters now?
No career firefighter opening was found on the Town’s job board when checked October 28, 2026. The reviewed 2025 competition closed June 30, 2025 at noon. Check the Town’s current opportunities page for a new campaign; volunteer recruitment is a separate stream.
Does Caledon use the FACT firefighter test?
Caledon’s archived 2024 recruitment required OFAI Candidate Testing Services, including Stage One FACT. The 2025 employer posting referred to Town-scheduled written and cognitive assessments without naming a publisher. FACT is the preparation focus here; use your invitation to confirm administration and certificate requirements.
Does Caledon use an MMI interview?
The archived 2024 employer notice explicitly described an MMI: five interview questions and three practical assessments, with five minutes per station, about one hour overall. It was followed by a panel interview. The 2025 posting required behavioural/competency interviews but did not confirm the same MMI format.
Do I need OFAI certificates before applying?
Do not assume a single rule covers every Caledon intake. The 2024 campaign required Stages One to Three certificates by interview and valid through signed offer, and included Swim. The 2025 posting described a Town-scheduled assessment pathway, including York fitness. Confirm the requirements for the live campaign before booking.
Which fire certifications does Caledon require?
The 2025 career posting required NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II, plus NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, with the specified Pro Board or IFSAC proof. It also described an Ontario legacy-recognition route. Read the current posting for accepted evidence and any updated standards.
Do I need a DZ licence for a career firefighter job?
The 2025 full-time posting required a valid, unrestricted Ontario DZ licence with no more than three demerit points. The volunteer route allows eligible applicants to enter with a full G licence; that volunteer rule does not replace the career requirement.
What is the Caledon firefighter salary?
HR News Canada reported a first-class base rate of $118,600 effective July 1, 2025 under the 2023–2025 arbitration award. A newer 2026 base rate and current recruit/probationary rate were not verified. Overtime, recognition pay and benefits are separate from base salary.
Do career applicants have to live within 10 kilometres of a station?
The Town publishes the 10-kilometre residency rule for volunteer applicants. That rule was not listed in the reviewed 2025 career posting. Apply the residency and availability requirements in the specific job posting you are pursuing.
Does previous firefighting experience help?
The 2025 posting preferred active career or volunteer firefighters and said applicants with previous full-time experience could start at their prior classification, up to first class. Confirm recognition of your experience and classification with the Town; volunteering does not guarantee a career appointment.
