How to become a Calgary firefighter
- 1
Check your application basics
Start with your education, work eligibility and driving record. Put proof in one folder so you can find it quickly when document submission opens.
- 2
Plan the longer qualifications
Price out advanced first aid and Class 3/Q training early. Work backwards from the City’s pre-hire deadline before booking courses.
- 3
Prepare for the right exam
Use the NTN instructions in your invitation to identify the assessment before buying practice material. Calgary’s current outline calls it a two-part online exam.
- 4
Build interview examples and fitness together
Keep a short record of real examples from work and volunteering. Give physical preparation the same steady attention; it should not begin when a test invitation arrives.
The department at a glance
Calgary is worth preparing for well before an application window opens. Its process takes you from an online aptitude exam to an in-person interview, background review and physical testing, with several qualifications due later in the process. This guide explains the order so you can plan your training, paperwork and budget.
More than firefighting
Calgary firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle collisions and other calls, alongside fire prevention and community work. The City’s 2026 intake announcement also describes career paths in technical rescue, aquatic rescue and hazardous materials.
Pay & working pattern
Firefighter 1 — annualized base pay · $125,868 per year
Effective December 29, 2025
Approximately $125,868/year: the City’s published $10,489 monthly rate × 12. Firefighter 1 is $57.41/hour; probationary pay starts at $37.32/hour ($6,818/month). The collective-agreement schedule is dated December 29, 2025; the recruitment page labels these January 2026 rates. Annual figures use rounded monthly amounts and exclude overtime and premiums.
The collective agreement sets the standard Fire Operations rotation at 24 hours on, 48 hours off, 24 hours on, then 96 hours off, averaging 42 hours per week. Recruit training and other assignments can follow different schedules.
When does Calgary recruit firefighters?
The City’s most recently confirmed application window ran June 1–30, 2026. It anticipated hiring 120–150 probationary firefighters from that posting. The same announcement reported more than 2,700 applications and 119 graduates in the previous year. These figures describe different recruitment groups, so they are not an applicant-to-hire success rate.
No next application window was confirmed when this guide was reviewed on November 1, 2026. Watch Calgary’s recruitment page and use the waiting period for qualifications and preparation. The City’s candidate resource list also points to interview help, practice material, financial support and recruitment events.
Minimum qualifications
Separate the application minimums from the pre-hire qualifications. Calgary requires the latter before Step 9, the selection committee review; they must remain valid at hire.
- 01Age and work eligibility
- Be at least 18 and eligible to work in Canada.
- 02Education
- A Canadian high school diploma, equivalent or journeyman certificate is accepted. International schooling needs foreign credential recognition.
- 03Driving at application
- Hold a non-GDL Alberta Class 5 licence or provincial/territorial equivalent, with fewer than six demerit points.
- 04Background
- No criminal activity in the previous three years; a pardon or record suspension is required for convictions where applicable.
- 05First aid before selection
- Complete Advanced First Aid of at least 80 hours or equivalent, plus CPR at Health Care Provider level or BLS, before Step 9.
- 06Commercial licence before selection
- Have Alberta Class 1, 2 or 3 and an air-brake Q endorsement, or provincial equivalents, before Step 9.
- 07Immunization records
- Arrange the City’s required immunizations before selection. The Wellness Centre verifies immunity through lab work at the conditional-offer stage. Start collecting records early; missing evidence can take time to resolve.

What strengthens your application
Useful experience can come from a trade, another job or community work. Explain what you learned and what you actually did, rather than relying on a list of certificates.
Education and trade skills
Post-secondary study, a Red Seal trade and relevant training can strengthen an application. Connect each qualification to a practical example of responsibility or learning.
Work and service experience
Firefighting, emergency-service work and volunteering are useful assets. Other jobs can also give you strong examples of teamwork, public service and making decisions under pressure.
Leadership and community involvement
Choose examples where your actions made a difference. Be ready to explain who benefited, what changed and what you would improve next time.
Aptitude & physical testing
Calgary uses NTN for its online aptitude exam, followed later by CPAT and a separate treadmill assessment. These are different assessments with different preparation needs.
NTN assessment
The City identifies National Testing Network as its vendor and describes a two-part online exam, currently $55 USD. Its resource list links to FireTEAM practice material, but the recruitment outline does not name the exact exam version. Use the invitation to confirm what you will sit; do not assume Calgary uses the same exam as another department.
CPAT
CPAT tests job-related physical ability. Calgary lists a $200 + GST fee at its facilities and offers two orientations and two timed trials before the scheduled test. Review the IAFF preparation resources and your appointment instructions. Ask CFD about acceptance and validity before booking an external CPAT.
A separate treadmill test
Passing CPAT is not the end of fitness testing. At the medical stage, Calgary uses a maximum-effort treadmill evaluation with a face mask for direct gas analysis. The published recruit minimum is 12 minutes 30 seconds. The protocol increases speed and incline; prepare for the published test rather than treating it as a flat treadmill run.
Prepare beyond the pass mark
Calgary’s Fire Task Exercise Guide covers mobility, ladder work, tool hoists, search, drags and hose work. Use it to identify gaps early and seek qualified coaching where needed. The guide prepares you for recruit training; it is not a list of extra selection tests or a substitute for the City’s assessment instructions.
Written test preparation
Also applying to Edmonton?
Edmonton references CPS preparation resources. Firefighter Academy’s CPS tests support that separate application route; they are not NTN practice for Calgary. For Calgary, start with the City’s candidate resource list and your NTN invitation.
Explore CPS prep for EdmontonWhat to budget for Calgary recruitment
The City currently lists $55 USD for NTN, $500 + GST for the polygraph and $200 + GST for CPAT at CFD. The two Canadian-dollar assessments total $735 including 5% GST, plus the separate US-dollar exam fee. These are the published fees reviewed in November 2026; check your invitation before paying.
Allow additional room for advanced first aid, CPR/BLS, commercial-driver and air-brake training, licence fees, records and travel. Do not book every expense at once: make a simple stage-by-stage budget and keep cancellation terms in mind. The City’s resource list includes potential funding and employment-support options.
The recruitment process
Calgary publishes ten steps. Here is the order, with the paperwork and preparation that matter at each point. Your Recruitment Officer’s instructions set the deadlines for your file.
- 1
Apply online
Submit during the advertised window and meet the application minimums by closing.
- 2
Complete the aptitude exam
Approved applicants are invited to the online NTN assessment.
- 3
Submit documents
Upload qualification evidence; a Recruitment Officer is assigned to manage your file.
- 4
Complete the Personal History Statement
Review the process-preparation material and submit accurate, complete history.
- 5
Attend the interview
An in-person behavioural panel interview in Calgary uses STAR answers: Situation, Task, Actions, Result.
- 6
Attend the polygraph
The in-person Calgary exam checks information supplied during recruitment. The listed fee is $500 + GST.
- 7
Complete CPAT
Attend the physical ability assessment and follow the City’s testing instructions.
- 8
Provide references
Supply at least three professional references, including your current employer; family and friends do not qualify.
- 9
Selection committee review
Your completed file is assessed for suitability and placement on an eligibility list. Pre-hire qualifications are due before this step.
- 10
Meet the conditional-offer requirements
Complete medical and fitness assessments, updated checks and documents, fittings and recruit orientation. An eligibility-list place is not a job offer.
How to prepare for Calgary’s behavioural interview
Start with experiences you can explain in detail: resolving a disagreement, owning a mistake, helping someone under pressure, learning a difficult skill or contributing to a team. These are preparation prompts, not claimed Calgary interview questions. An ordinary work example can be useful when your actions and reasoning are clear.
Use STAR as an outline. Set the situation briefly, explain your responsibility, spend most of the answer on what you did and why, then give the result and what you learned. Say “I” when describing your contribution and acknowledge the team where it matters. Practise with someone who will ask follow-up questions, and use notes rather than memorizing a script.
Keep your Personal History Statement accurate and consistent with your application. Build a timeline from records where possible and ask your Recruitment Officer about anything unclear. The City’s process includes a polygraph to check the information you provide. Preparation should help you recall and explain the truth clearly.
Your application checklist
Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.

Common questions
Guidance for Calgary applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Calgary Fire hiring right now?
The City’s advertised June 1–30, 2026 application window has closed. We have not confirmed the next intake date. Use the official recruitment page for new application windows; the 2026 dates are historical.
Do I need firefighter certification to apply to Calgary?
The City’s current application minimums do not list NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II as mandatory certificates. Fire-related training is listed as an asset. Read the next posting before committing to a course solely for Calgary.
Do I need a Class 3 licence when I apply?
A non-GDL Class 5 or equivalent meets the published application licence minimum. Class 1, 2 or 3 plus air brakes is required before Step 9, along with the other pre-hire qualifications.
Does Calgary use CPS, FACT or NTN?
Calgary names NTN. Its resource list includes FireTEAM practice links, but the hiring outline only describes a two-part online exam. Check the exact version in your invitation. FACT or CPS practice is not a Calgary-specific NTN package.
Is the Calgary interview an MMI?
The published process describes an in-person Behavioural Descriptive Interview panel in Calgary, with STAR answers. It does not describe an MMI circuit.
Is CPAT the only fitness assessment?
No. A separate treadmill evaluation takes place at the medical stage. Calgary’s protocol uses direct gas analysis and requires a recruit minimum of 12 minutes 30 seconds.
How much does a Calgary firefighter earn?
The City’s January 2026 table lists Firefighter 1 at $57.41/hour or $10,489/month. That is about $125,868 over 12 months. Probationary pay starts at $37.32/hour or $6,818/month. These base figures exclude overtime and premiums.
Can I apply from outside Calgary?
The City’s 2026 announcement says candidates do not have to live in Calgary to participate. Plan for in-person stages; the City says it does not cover relocation costs.
Is a swimming test listed?
The current public recruitment outline lists CPAT and a treadmill assessment, but does not list a separate swim test. Follow your own candidate instructions if additional assessments are assigned.
What happens if I fail CPAT?
Calgary says failing to meet CPAT standards during recruitment means you need a valid CPAT certification to reapply. Ask the Recruitment team about your situation and certificate requirements.
