How to become a Chatham-Kent firefighter
- 1
Apply to the municipality first
Complete the live online application and required screening questions before its closing time. Keep the confirmation.
- 2
Wait for the FSO invitation
Only selected applicants are told to register. Read the full booking email before paying or choosing assessments.
- 3
Prepare the later package
Use the FSO checklist to gather the résumé and qualification copies. Track the testing and document deadlines separately.
The department at a glance
Chatham-Kent’s career firefighter route starts with a municipal application. Selected applicants are then invited to book Firefighter Services of Ontario (FSO) screening. Do not book a recruitment appointment before the municipality contacts you. The 2026 competition had separate application, testing and document deadlines. Applications closed September 17; testing and the FSO package were due later in October. Those dates are historical. Check the municipal job board for the next opening, and keep career hiring separate from volunteer or auxiliary recruitment.
More than firefighting
Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue is a composite service with 19 stations across the municipality. Career crews operate from the two Chatham stations and Wallaceburg within that wider network. The job includes fires, medical calls, collisions and rescues, plus inspections, pre-emergency planning, training and equipment care.
Pay & working pattern
First-class base benchmark — January 2024 · $111,249 per year
Effective January 1, 2024
The February 2026 award sets the January 2024 base at $111,249, used here as the first-class benchmark from the award’s wage and officer-differential structure. This is a dated rate; newer first-class pay has not been verified. The separate 2026 recruitment posting quoted $77,874 annually for the probationary position. Overtime and other additions are separate.
The 2026 career posting described 24-hour shifts averaging 42 hours a week over four weeks, with a 12-month probationary period. Confirm your assignment, schedule and offer conditions with the municipality.
Minimum qualifications
Use the municipality’s career requirements and the competition-specific document checklist together. The points below reflect official standing guidance and the referenced 2026 process.
- 01Eligibility and education
- Municipal guidance requires applicants to be over 18, legally entitled to work in Canada, able to communicate clearly in English and hold secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- 02Firefighter credentials
- NFPA 1001 I and II accredited certification is required, with accepted grandfathering routes identified by the municipality. Check the exact evidence needed for your route rather than assuming experience alone replaces certification.
- 03First Aid and CPR
- Keep valid Standard First Aid and CPR Basic Rescuer Level C credentials. The 2026 FSO checklist requested photocopies.
- 04DZ licence
- A valid Ontario Class D licence with Z endorsement, or the accepted provincial equivalent, is required. Follow the employer’s driver’s-abstract instructions.
- 05FSO testing
- The municipal entry list includes FSO candidate testing evidence covering clinical screening, CPAT, aptitude, vision/hearing, tread water and ESR. Follow the invitation for the full package and timing.
- 06Employment checks
- Expect qualification and reference verification and a satisfactory Police Information Search with vulnerable-sector screening. Use the live posting and offer to determine when to obtain time-sensitive documents.
What strengthens your application
The provider’s 2026 checklist identifies these preferred qualifications. Make them easy to verify with certificates and specific résumé examples.
Further education and trade skills
University, college and recognised trade credentials appear on the FSO preferred checklist. Explain how the learning has helped you work safely or solve a problem.
Fire and emergency experience
Career or volunteer suppression work, military service and medical or other emergency experience can support your application. State the type of service and your actual responsibilities accurately.
Community involvement
The checklist includes community and volunteer experience. Describe whom you helped, what you contributed and what changed as a result.
Aptitude & physical testing
FSO handles the screening package. The municipality decides who progresses to testing, and FSO supplies the appointment and assessment instructions. Plan written, physical, medical and water preparation as separate tasks.
Listening, reading, maths and mechanics
FSO’s official aptitude page describes these subjects, a multiple-choice format and a 70% passing standard. Calculators are not permitted. Practise careful instruction-following and arithmetic without a calculator.
CPAT and 15-minute tread water
The 2026 posting required medical, clinical, CPAT, acrophobia, aptitude and the 15-minute tread-water assessment to be successfully completed in one day. Follow the current invitation for its requirements.
A separate completion deadline
Complete the Emotional Stability and Resiliency assessment according to the provider’s email. In the reference process, ESR had its own deadline ahead of the final testing/document deadline. Do not leave it until the appointment.
Confirm each component with FSO
The 2026 provider instructions allowed some earlier core-four results only where they met the specified date and same-day condition. Clinical assessment used six-month validity; specified other results used one year. Ask FSO to confirm your eligibility and package submission arrangements.
Written test preparation
Practise the written skills before testing
Independent CPS-style practice covers related reading, maths and mechanical skills. Use it alongside the provider’s instructions; it does not confirm the exam publisher or issue an FSO certificate.
Practise written-test skillsThe recruitment process
Follow the municipality’s application first, then the FSO invitation and document instructions. These are different steps with different deadlines; completing one does not complete the others.
- 1
Read the career posting
Check the full-time role, mandatory qualifications and municipal application deadline. Save the posting for later reference.
Volunteer and auxiliary recruitment follow separate arrangements.
- 2
Submit the municipal application
Provide a current résumé and complete the required application questions. Submit the complete package before closing.
In the reference competition, application closed before the final FSO testing date.
- 3
Register with FSO when invited
Follow the municipal invitation, then choose an available appointment and pay the applicable screening costs.
Book the required package together rather than assuming several separate appointments satisfy the recruitment.
- 4
Complete screening and submit documents
Follow the ESR email, attend the required assessments and provide the checklist package using the accepted handoff method.
The 2026 provider instructions accepted in-person or mailed packages, not email. Recheck the next intake’s arrangements.
- 5
Prepare for the municipal interview
Use examples of safe judgment, teamwork, service and learning. Explain your own actions and outcomes.
A fixed MMI format, interview count or scoring threshold has not been verified. Follow the invitation.
- 6
Complete checks and offer conditions
Respond to qualification, reference, police and driving-record requests. Confirm training and availability requirements before starting.
Being placed on a qualified-candidate list is not a guaranteed appointment.

Common questions
Guidance for Chatham-Kent applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Chatham-Kent hiring career firefighters now?
The reference 2026 application deadline was September 17, with later FSO steps in October. Those dates have passed. Check the municipal job board for a new vacancy; an old provider listing is not proof that applications remain open.
Should I book FSO before applying?
For the reference process, no. Submit the municipal application first and wait for Chatham-Kent to invite you to testing. Both the employer posting and FSO recruitment instructions make that order clear.
Which written test does Chatham-Kent use?
The municipality uses FSO screening. FSO publicly describes the aptitude subjects and multiple-choice format but does not name the publisher on its exam page. Do not infer CPS or FACT solely from the provider name.
Is there a swimming assessment?
The 2026 posting required a 15-minute tread-water test as part of the FSO package. Prepare water skills as well as CPAT fitness and follow the actual assessment instructions.
Can I email my FSO application package?
The 2026 provider instructions said emailed packages would not be accepted; candidates used in-person delivery or mail. Check the current checklist and invitation before choosing a delivery method.
How much do Chatham-Kent firefighters earn?
The published January 2024 first-class base benchmark is $111,249, from the February 2026 award. The 2026 probationary posting separately quoted $77,874 annually. A newer first-class scale has not been verified here.
Is volunteer hiring the same as the career process?
No. The municipality runs separate career and volunteer/auxiliary routes. Read the specific vacancy and its rules; participation in one route does not automatically complete the other.
