How to become a Clarington firefighter

  1. 1

    Choose the career route

Look for a career or probationary firefighter vacancy on municipal careers. Volunteer applications follow a different route.

  2. 2

    Build your document folder

Have your résumé, cover letter, fire certificates and other credentials ready. Match the upload instructions in the live posting.

  3. 3

    Wait for York instructions

Keep training, but let the Hiring Committee tell you when to complete York testing. Six-month validity makes timing important.

01

The department at a glance

Clarington recruits career firefighters through a process that includes written and practical assessments, an interview and York Firefighter Fitness Testing. The municipality arranges the York date; candidates pay for the testing and results last six months. Waiting for those instructions can save you from paying for an assessment that expires too early. Clarington also hires volunteer firefighters. This guide focuses on the career route, so a volunteer opening or its local residency rules should not be treated as a full-time recruitment announcement.

More than firefighting

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services is a composite department with career and volunteer firefighters across five stations. Career work includes fires, medical emergencies, vehicle collisions and rescues, as well as training, equipment care and public service.

Pay & working pattern

First-class base benchmark — July 2024 · $112,814 per year

Effective July 1, 2024

The February 2025 arbitration award sets a $112,814 annual base effective July 1, 2024. This is presented as the first-class benchmark, consistent with the municipality’s earlier first-class wage reporting and separate officer differentials. It is a dated reference, not verified 2026 pay or starting pay. A current recruit rate has not been confirmed; overtime and other additions are separate.

The past career posting described rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Check the next advertisement and current agreement for the schedule and conditions attached to a vacancy.

02

Minimum qualifications

Clarington’s standing career page explains the selection process, rather than providing a complete current eligibility list. This credential checklist draws on its archived 2022 career posting. Use it to prepare, then check every item against the next live advertisement.

01Education and fire training
The 2022 career posting listed Grade 12 or equivalent, plus recognised college pre-service training or an acceptable combination of education, skills and work experience. Recheck accepted equivalents in the next posting.
02Firefighter certification
NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II were required in that career posting. The standing career page also uses these certificates as an example of required application evidence.
03Licence and driving record
The historical career requirement was an unrestricted Ontario DZ licence and a satisfactory driver’s abstract. Confirm the current document and licence deadlines before applying.
04First Aid and CPR
Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR-C were listed in the archived career posting. Keep credentials current and check whether the next intake changes the required level.
05Physical readiness and work eligibility
The archived posting required legal eligibility to work in Canada and the ability to perform demanding suppression duties. Current career guidance includes medical, fitness and swim assessment through York.
06Application and later checks
Read the live posting for all upload and employment conditions. Keep supporting evidence ready; the Hiring Committee requests additional documents during the process. Do not order time-sensitive checks from an old checklist.
03

What strengthens your application

The archived career posting named additional education, a skilled trade and emergency services experience as assets. Useful experience can come from outside a fire department; explain the connection to the work.

Education or a trade

A relevant diploma, degree or skilled trade can support practical problem solving. Describe a task where your training helped you spot a risk or complete work correctly.

Emergency and public service experience

Use examples of working with others, helping someone under pressure and communicating clearly. State your own actions and the outcome.

Practical preparation

Review the skills taught in your fire training, keep fitness consistent and practise explaining decisions aloud. These are preparation suggestions, not extra municipal entry requirements.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

The municipality describes knowledge-based firefighting exams and hands-on skills assessments. Its public career page does not name FACT, CPS or an OFAI certificate package as the written-test route. Prepare for the stated content and follow the invitation.

Written knowledge

Review the basics of firefighting

Clarington says its written assessment may test firefighting fundamentals. Review your training materials and the subjects named in the invitation. Ask for clarification if the permitted references or scope are unclear.

Practical assessment

Be ready to demonstrate job skills

The municipality may assess hands-on, occupation-specific skills separately from the written exam. Review safe procedures through your training program or qualified instruction; the invitation sets the actual tasks and equipment rules.

Panel interview

Explain your experience and judgment

The published process places the interview typically after written and practical assessments. Expect discussion of knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications. A fixed MMI circuit, question count or pass mark has not been confirmed.

York testing

Medical, fitness and swimming

The municipality arranges the date. Testing includes hearing and vision, aerobic and physical assessments, and swimming, at your expense. Results are valid for six months. Follow the Hiring Committee’s timing rather than booking on the assumption that an early result will be accepted.

05

The recruitment process

These stages follow Clarington’s published career recruitment process. Assessments may be split into separate stages, and the Hiring Committee supplies the dates and document instructions.

  1. 1

    Submit a complete online application

Create an account through Clarington careers. Prepare the cover letter, résumé, required certification evidence and answers to the pre-screening questions.

Keep the email confirming successful submission.

  2. 2

    Complete written and practical assessments

Prepare for firefighting knowledge and hands-on job skills. The municipality may assess these independently or in separate stages.

Read each invitation for its location, arrival time, required items and assessment scope.

  3. 3

    Attend the interview

Discuss the experience and qualifications you would bring to the role. Prepare examples that show safe judgment, teamwork and service.

Explain what you did, why you chose that approach, the result and what you learned.

  4. 4

    Complete municipality-arranged York testing

Attend on the date communicated by the Hiring Committee and follow the provider’s preparation instructions.

Budget for applicant-paid testing. The six-month result window is why the municipal instructions matter.

  5. 5

    Provide the remaining documents

Respond to requests from the Hiring Committee and review any employment conditions carefully.

Clarington generally notifies candidates who advance. Interview candidates are told afterward whether they will move forward.

Common questions

Guidance for Clarington applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Clarington hiring full-time firefighters now?

Check municipal careers for a live career or probationary firefighter posting. The permanent Become a Firefighter page explains the process; it does not by itself establish that a full-time intake is open.

Does Clarington use FACT or CPS?

Its official career page describes written exams on firefighting basics and practical skills assessments, but does not identify FACT or CPS. Treat the test publisher as unconfirmed and follow the content described in the invitation.

Do I need OFAI certificates for Clarington?

The standing career process describes municipality-arranged York testing. It does not list a required OFAI package. Read the live career posting before paying for certificates specifically for Clarington.

Should I book York testing before applying?

Wait for the Hiring Committee’s instructions. Clarington arranges the testing date and results last six months. An early test could expire before the municipality needs it, leading to another test at your expense.

Does the testing include swimming?

Yes. Clarington’s career process explicitly includes swim testing within York Firefighter Fitness Testing, alongside medical, hearing, vision, aerobic and physical assessments. Follow the actual testing instructions for standards and preparation.

What is the Clarington firefighter salary?

The 2025 award publishes a $112,814 annual base benchmark effective July 1, 2024, used here for first-class comparison. It is not a verified 2026 rate or a recruit salary. Sunshine List totals can include overtime and retroactive pay, so they are not a substitute for the base scale.

Do career applicants have to live near a Clarington fire station?

The municipal page places its residency and five-kilometre station requirement under volunteer firefighter eligibility. Do not automatically apply those rules to career applicants; check the career posting for any separate condition.
