How to become a Edmonton firefighter

  1. 1

    Check your entry qualifications

Get your diploma and valid first-aid certificate ready. For the 2027 intake, read the City’s confirmed Intermediate First Aid change before paying for a course.

  2. 2

    Prepare for the scored stages

Organize evidence for your resume claims, practise aptitude skills and build a bank of real examples for timed MMI answers.

  3. 3

    Plan fitness, fees and travel

Read the U of A test package early. Allow time for medical clearance, training, bookings and any travel to Edmonton.

01

The department at a glance

Want to become an Edmonton firefighter? Start with the application requirements, then prepare for the three scored parts of selection: your resume, the aptitude test and Multiple Mini Interviews. You’ll also need to pass physical testing and the later pre-employment checks. This guide explains how those pieces fit together so you can plan your preparation before the next application window. For the 2027 intake, the City is updating its process. It has confirmed Intermediate First Aid, Alberta OHS-approved or a provincial equivalent, as the minimum medical certification, valid when you apply. Other details below describe the process currently published by the City and may change as the update is released.

More than firefighting

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is a municipal career service. Firefighters need to work safely with a crew, communicate clearly with residents and keep learning throughout their careers. The City values compassion, resilience, teamwork and service to Edmonton’s diverse communities. Your application and interview examples should show how you already bring those qualities to work, volunteering or everyday responsibilities.

Pay & working pattern

5th-year firefighter — City’s published classification · $126,827 per year

Effective December 14, 2025

EFFU 2024–2027 agreement, Appendix I: fifth-year annual base pay is $126,827 and probationary/1st year is $79,901 for December 14, 2025–December 12, 2026. Scheduled December 13, 2026 rates are $131,139 and $82,618 respectively. The City recruitment webpage still shows an earlier grid; the agreement’s dated schedule is used here. Overtime and other applicable premiums are separate.

The published operations pay grid is based on 84 bi-weekly hours, averaging 42 hours a week. Emergency response is a round-the-clock service; confirm the assigned schedule and employment terms in your offer.

Edmonton firefighter salary and progression

Edmonton uses years of service rather than a “first-class” label. The EFFU 2024–2027 collective agreement, Appendix I (page 107), lists fifth-year base pay of $126,827 annually for December 14, 2025–December 12, 2026. Probationary/first-year pay is $79,901. The operations schedule is based on 84 bi-weekly hours.

  • Probationary / 1st year: $79,901 annually.
  • 2nd year: $92,584 annually.
  • 3rd year: $105,266 annually.
  • 4th year: $117,949 annually.
  • 5th year: $126,827 annually.
  • Later service steps: 8th year $129,364; 11th year $135,705; 18th year $136,973. Scheduled December 13, 2026 increases bring fifth-year pay to $131,139 and probationary/1st year to $82,618. These figures exclude overtime and other applicable premiums.

Application timing and the 2027 intake update

Edmonton’s usual intake is January 1–31, with potential recruit classes employed in the following year. Do not read “2027 intake” as a guaranteed 2027 job start. The City says its process is being revised and more changes will be posted. The confirmed change so far is Intermediate First Aid as the minimum medical certification, valid at application. Use the time before applications open to gather documents, check first-aid expiry, prepare resume evidence and train for the physical demands. Once the new posting appears, compare it with your preparation list before submitting. Keep a copy of your application and check your inbox and spam folder for invitations.

02

Minimum qualifications

Use the City’s next application package as your final checklist. The confirmed 2027 first-aid change appears at the top of its recruitment page, while the older medical certification list remains below it. Complete the required qualification before applying: proof of enrolment is not accepted.

01Age and eligibility to work
Be at least 18. The City accepts Canadian citizens, permanent residents and applicants with a valid open work permit; work-permit eligibility is assessed case by case.
02High school education
Have a high school diploma or equivalent. Upload the required documents with the application; records from an earlier competition are not carried forward.
03Medical certification for the 2027 intake
The City has confirmed Intermediate First Aid, Alberta OHS-approved or a provincial equivalent, as the minimum medical standard. It must be valid when you apply. Check the finalized package for accepted equivalents and documentation.
04Class 3 licence with air brakes by hire
The published requirement is a valid Alberta Class 3 licence with air-brake endorsement, or a provincial equivalent. It is requested at hire rather than application. You must also qualify for and maintain a City driver’s permit and have a satisfactory driving record.
05Physical readiness
Pass the required fitness evaluation and remain ready for later job-related assessments. Read the medical-clearance requirements before booking the U of A test.
06Police and medical screening
Hire depends on a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check and the required medical assessment. Follow the City’s instructions on when to obtain these records.
07Respectful public service
The City expects applicants to support an inclusive, diverse and respectful workplace. Be ready to explain how you communicate, work with others and serve people with different needs.
03

What strengthens your application

Edmonton’s resume review is scored, worth 10% under the published process. The application’s pre-screen questions identify the assets that earn points. These preparation tips help you present your experience; they are not a substitute for the City’s scoring criteria.

Back up every scored claim

Match your education, certificates and experience to the application’s actual pre-screen questions. Keep supporting evidence and references together; the City verifies credentials at the MMI stage.

Make your experience specific

Describe what you did, who relied on you and how you checked the result. Work, caregiving, community service, sports and trades can all provide useful examples when they answer the criterion.

Learn how Edmonton works

Read about EFRS and the communities it serves. The City’s cultural commitments are Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent. Prepare examples that show those behaviours rather than simply repeating the words.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Plan separately for the aptitude test, the University of Alberta fitness evaluation and Edmonton’s later job-related assessments. They measure different things. The City links to CPS HR preparation material for the aptitude stage, but does not publish a full exam blueprint or product title.

APTITUDE

Virtual aptitude test

By invitation, typically in March or April under the published process. The City lists a $65 non-refundable fee, no rewrites and a 40% contribution to the overall score. It names oral information, reading, numerical skills, maps, diagrams and mechanical reasoning among the assessed skills. The City links official CPS HR study resources: a $5 preparation manual and $15 practice tests. These prices and the test fee may change. Do not assume a question count, calculator policy or test version until you receive instructions.

PHYSICAL FITNESS

University of Alberta evaluation

A pass/fail treadmill assessment followed by six simulated firefighting tasks. Read the University’s general information package and arrange the mandatory medical clearance. General bookings take about three to four hours. Edmonton allows one opportunity per recruitment cycle and reassesses readiness before an offer. Fee mismatch to budget for: Edmonton’s page lists $388.50; the University’s booking page lists $399 plus GST ($418.95). Confirm the current charge and Edmonton’s accepted testing dates before paying.

PRE-CLASS KNOWLEDGE

Threshold Knowledge Test

Before a recruit class is formed, candidates complete a written assessment using EFRS-provided Essentials of Firefighting material for NFPA 1001 Level 1, plus a team workout. The City says materials are supplied up to six weeks ahead with two information sessions. This later knowledge assessment is separate from the initial aptitude test. Study the material EFRS supplies for your class rather than buying an assumed exam package.

LATER ASSESSMENTS

Job-related and medical checks

The City describes a darkened smokehouse maze, a 30-metre ladder climb with a harness, an extension-ladder raise and hose lifting/moving tasks. Medical evaluation uses NFPA 1582 as a guideline; a psychological assessment may also be required. Use the City’s briefing and approved training environments. These are supervised selection tasks, not a checklist to recreate on your own.

Written test preparation

Prepare for Edmonton’s aptitude stage

Build confidence with reading, numerical and mechanical reasoning practice. Start with the City-linked CPS HR resources, then use our original CPS practice questions to work on weak areas. Edmonton’s invitation determines the test format.

05

The recruitment process

The currently published scoring is aptitude 40%, resume review 10% and MMI 50%, with fitness assessed on a pass/fail basis. Passing individual stages does not guarantee a place on the eligibility list or a job. Edmonton is revising the 2027 intake, so follow the dates and sequence in your invitation.

  1. 1

    Application and resume review

Apply through the City’s careers site during the advertised window. Upload fresh copies of all required documents and answer the pre-screen questions carefully. The resume review contributes 10% of the published overall score.

The City describes January 1–31 as its usual application window for classes employed in the following year. Final 2027 details are still being updated.

  2. 2

    Invited aptitude test

Watch your email for the virtual assessment invitation, payment instructions and technical requirements. The published aptitude stage is worth 40%, normally runs in March or April, and has no rewrites.

Start with the official CPS HR preparation links on Edmonton’s page. Use your invitation for the exact timing, permitted aids and test rules.

  3. 3

    Multiple Mini Interviews

The City’s current webpage describes seven stations, one question per station, two minutes to gather your thoughts and five minutes to answer. The MMI contributes 50% of the overall score. Your resume claims are also verified at this stage.

Older City FAQ material describes eight stations. Use the station count and instructions in your own invitation, especially while the 2027 process is being revised.

  4. 4

    Ride-along and physical fitness

The published process includes a ride-along stage, with further details to come, and a pass/fail U of A fitness evaluation. Edmonton gives candidates one fitness-test opportunity per recruitment cycle and reassesses readiness before a job offer.

Coordinate testing dates with Edmonton’s instructions. The University’s general result-validity period does not automatically establish Edmonton’s acceptance window.

  5. 5

    Psychological assessment and eligibility list

A psychological assessment may be required. The highest overall scores, together with a fitness pass, determine placement on the eligibility list. The City says the list remains valid until December 31 of the following year, with possible extension by the Fire Chief.

An eligibility-list place is consideration for a future class, not an offer or a guaranteed start date.

  6. 6

    Threshold knowledge and pre-hire checks

When a class is being formed, follow instructions for the Threshold Knowledge Test, medical, vulnerable-sector police check, references, licence verification and job-related tests. EFRS provides the knowledge-test study material.

Keep the initial aptitude test and this later firefighting knowledge test separate in your preparation plan.

  7. 7

    Offer and recruit training

Successful candidates proceed through the remaining orientation, mask-fitting and offer steps into the recruit training program. Confirm your reporting date, outstanding documents and employment terms before making relocation plans.

Class dates and selection depend on EFRS staffing needs. The recruitment guide is not a job posting.

How to prepare for Edmonton’s MMI interviews

Practise with a timer: two minutes to make a short plan, then five minutes to answer aloud. Start by answering the question directly. For an experience question, explain the situation briefly, focus on what you did and finish with the result and what you learned. For a scenario, explain the immediate priorities, how you would communicate and when you would ask for help. Build examples of teamwork, helping a member of the public, receiving feedback, handling disagreement and making a safe decision under pressure. Review the evidence behind each resume claim so your answers match your application. Original practice prompts: Describe a time you changed your approach after feedback. How would you handle a teammate overlooking a safety step? These are our practice questions, not Edmonton’s interview questions.

08

Common questions

Guidance for Edmonton applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

When does Edmonton firefighter recruitment open?

The City publishes January 1–31 as its usual annual application window for potential recruit classes employed in the following year. As of October 31, 2026, it is updating the 2027 intake. Check the finalized City posting before treating any dates as confirmed for your competition.

What first-aid certificate do I need for the 2027 Edmonton intake?

Edmonton has confirmed Intermediate First Aid, Alberta OHS-approved or a provincial equivalent, as the minimum accepted medical certification. It must be valid when you apply. The older detailed list still appears on the City page, so use the new intake notice and final application instructions when choosing a course.

Do I need NFPA 1001 before applying to Edmonton?

The current recruitment page does not list NFPA 1001 certification as a minimum application credential. It does describe a later Threshold Knowledge Test based on NFPA 1001 Level 1 material supplied by EFRS. Check the finalized 2027 requirements before paying for additional training.

Does Edmonton use CPS HR or FACT for its aptitude test?

The City links applicants to official CPS HR study materials. It does not name FACT or publish the exact exam title on the recruitment page. Use the CPS HR links and your candidate invitation rather than assuming that another department’s test version applies.

What is the Edmonton firefighter interview format?

The City currently describes Multiple Mini Interviews worth 50% of the overall score: seven stations, one question each, two minutes to gather your thoughts and five minutes to respond. Older City FAQ material describes eight stations. Your invitation gives the format for your intake.

How much do Edmonton firefighters make?

The EFFU 2024–2027 agreement lists fifth-year base pay of $126,827 annually and probationary/first-year pay of $79,901 for December 14, 2025–December 12, 2026. Scheduled December 13, 2026 rates are $131,139 and $82,618 respectively. The City recruitment webpage still displays an earlier pay grid. The salary section uses the agreement’s dated schedule.

Do I need a Class 3 licence when I apply?

The currently published requirement is Alberta Class 3 with air-brake endorsement, or a provincial equivalent, at hire rather than application. A satisfactory driving record and eligibility for the City driver’s permit also apply.

Which physical fitness test does Edmonton require?

The University of Alberta firefighter evaluation: a treadmill assessment followed by six job simulations. It is pass/fail. Edmonton allows one opportunity per recruitment cycle and reassesses physical readiness before an offer.

How much should I budget for Edmonton’s testing?

The City lists $65 for the aptitude test. Its fitness figure is $388.50, while U of A’s own booking page currently lists $399 plus GST, or $418.95. Budget using the confirmed booking charge and allow separately for medical clearance, documents, licence upgrades and travel. Fees can change.

Does passing every stage guarantee an Edmonton firefighter job?

No. The City ranks candidates using the scored stages and requires a fitness pass. Only the highest overall scores reach the eligibility list, and selection for a recruit class depends on EFRS needs and the remaining checks.
