How to become a Guelph firefighter

  1. 1

    Check the City posting

Read the complete advertisement before booking renewals. Note which credentials must be valid at application and later in the process.

  2. 2

    Audit your certificates

Put fire, medical, licence and OFAI documents in one folder. Check the expiry date on each result.

  3. 3

    Prepare your evidence

Build a concise résumé and examples of teamwork, public service, safe decisions and learning from feedback.

01

The department at a glance

Guelph uses OFAI candidate testing before you apply for a probationary firefighter position. Start by checking your fire certifications, medical training and test results against the employer posting. The 2026 competition also specified a separate City swim test, rather than an OFAI swim certificate. This guide covers the City of Guelph career route. Guelph/Eramosa is a separate municipality with its own recruitment. Use the City careers page for vacancies; an old posting or a recruitment link alone does not confirm that applications are open.

More than firefighting

The work includes fire suppression, rescue and medical response, along with training, pre-incident planning and public education. Equipment checks, station maintenance and post-fire cleanup are part of the job too.

Pay & working pattern

First-class firefighter — annual base · $119,632 per year

Effective January 1, 2026

Probationary base pay is $71,779.20 in the January 2026 schedule (60% of first class). New suppression hires progress through 70%, 80% and 90%, reaching first class at 48 months, subject to satisfactory advancement. Base figures exclude overtime and recognition pay.

Suppression operates on a four-platoon system averaging 42 hours a week. Check the posting and collective agreement for the shift arrangement attached to the vacancy.

02

Minimum qualifications

The qualifications below reflect Guelph’s 2026 probationary firefighter posting. Recheck the next advertisement for accepted credentials, expiry dates and document instructions.

01Age and work eligibility
The 2026 posting required applicants to be at least 18 and legally entitled to work in Canada.
02Education and fire certification
Grade 12 or equivalent, NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II, and NFPA 472 or 1072 were listed. Keep the actual certificates ready.
03Medical training
The employer specified current CPR BLS and, at minimum, a First Responder Certificate. Do not assume Standard First Aid alone meets that wording.
04DZ licence and driving record
A minimum DZ licence and a good driving record were required. The City considers both demerit points and the nature of driving infractions.
05OFAI candidate testing
Complete the required OFAI CTS pathway before applying and be ready to produce the related certificates. Check the next posting for its exact validity rules.
06Ability to do the work
Expect strenuous work in hazardous conditions. Communication, computer use and accurate keyboarding were also identified in the 2026 posting.
03

What strengthens your application

These can strengthen an application, but they do not replace a missing required certificate. Give a concrete example of what you did and how it helped someone.

Relevant experience

Emergency services, community work, trades and heavy equipment experience can provide useful examples of sound judgment and safe working habits.

Further training

Post-secondary education and additional relevant NFPA certifications were identified as assets. Explain how your training applies to the work.

Service and practical skills

Volunteer involvement, mechanical aptitude, organisation and additional languages can help show what you would bring to a crew and the public.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Complete the OFAI tests Guelph requires before applying. Keep a simple record of each result, its expiry date and any renewal appointment. The employer’s certificate rules control eligibility.

OFAI pathway

Aptitude, screening and job skills

OFAI Stage One is FACT. Stage Two covers hearing, vision and the encapsulated treadmill test; Stage Three covers physical aptitude and technical skills. Read the current guides for prerequisites and booking rules.

Guelph swimming

A separate City assessment

The 2026 employer posting said the OFAI swim test was not required and that a separate swim test would be administered during recruitment. Follow the next invitation for the standard, location and timing.

Preparation

Keep written and physical practice separate

Use timed practice for written skills. Maintain fitness and review your practical training safely with qualified instruction. Passing an aptitude practice test does not establish readiness for physical or technical assessments.

Written test preparation

Prepare for the FACT written test

Start with a timed practice attempt, then work on the areas where you lose accuracy. Review OFAI’s current candidate guide before test day.

05

The recruitment process

Use this as a preparation order. Guelph’s invitation emails and the next posting set the actual assessment sequence, dates and conditions.

  1. 1

    Read the live advertisement

Check every required qualification and the certificate dates. Save a copy of the posting for your records.

  2. 2

    Complete required OFAI testing

Guelph’s standing recruitment page places the required testing before the application. Plan enough time for results and any retest.

  3. 3

    Submit the online application

Tailor your résumé and cover letter to the advertised criteria. Complete any attached questionnaire and keep the submission confirmation.

  4. 4

    Prepare for City assessments

Keep proof of qualifications available for interview. Prepare specific examples of teamwork, difficult decisions and service; follow instructions for the separate swim assessment.

The exact interview format and any additional assessment dates must come from the City.

  5. 5

    Follow the remaining instructions

Monitor your email, respond to document requests promptly and read any offer conditions carefully.

Only candidates under consideration for an interview are contacted, according to the City’s careers page.

Common questions

Guidance for Guelph applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Guelph hiring firefighters now?

Check the City’s firefighter careers page and the linked application portal for a live, dated competition. This guide uses the 2026 posting as a requirements reference; it does not announce a new opening.

Does Guelph use the FACT test?

Guelph uses OFAI candidate testing, and FACT is OFAI Stage One. Complete the tests listed in the employer posting; written preparation alone does not cover the full pathway.

Do I need the OFAI swim test for Guelph?

The 2026 posting said no: Guelph would administer a separate swim test during recruitment. Recheck the next posting rather than assuming another department’s swim certificate rules apply.

Is Standard First Aid enough?

The 2026 posting specified CPR BLS and at least a First Responder Certificate. Compare the full name and level of your qualification with the employer’s wording before applying.

How much does a Guelph firefighter make?

The January 1, 2026 agreement schedule lists $119,632 annual first-class base pay and $71,779.20 probationary base pay. First class is a progression rate, not the starting salary.

What should I do between hiring rounds?

Keep required credentials current, build service and teamwork experience, and prepare an application that shows your own work. Check official vacancies regularly; there is no verified next hiring date in this guide.
