Get your application ready
Keep your Grade 12 evidence, DZ licence, First Aid/CPR and résumé organized. Review the current posting before answering the City’s mandatory questionnaire.

Apply through the City
Apply during the full-time recruitment window. Check your answers and attachments, then save the confirmation. Volunteer applications go through a separate competition.

The department at a glance
Thinking about full-time firefighting in Hamilton? You’ll apply through the City, complete an entry assessment, attend FSO testing and work through the interview and clearance stages. Getting your licence and documents ready early gives you more time to prepare for each step. This guide covers career hiring. Hamilton’s volunteer recruitment has its own requirements, explained below. The dated updates describe recent competitions so you can see what has changed.
More than firefighting
Hamilton has 26 emergency response stations and 30 locations in total, including support facilities. Full-time and volunteer crews serve the lower city, the Mountain, Dundas, Ancaster, Waterdown and rural Flamborough. Explore the station directory to get to know the communities and the areas between them. Between emergencies, firefighters train, teach fire safety, check apparatus and equipment, and share station duties. These everyday responsibilities keep a crew ready for the next call.
Pay & working pattern
First-class firefighter — annual base rate · $120,632 per year
Effective January 1, 2026
Effective January 1, 2026. Schedule A lists probationary pay of $78,410.80 and five annual wage steps. Excludes additional compensation; see the salary section.
Career firefighters work rotating shifts. The collective agreement uses a 42-hour work week for suppression firefighters; check the current posting and offer for the applicable schedule. Plan for nights, weekends, holidays, training and the responsibility of arriving fit and ready for duty.
Looking for volunteer firefighting in Hamilton?
At the October 25, 2026 review, Hamilton was accepting applications for its 2027 Probationary Volunteer Firefighter recruitment. Full-time applications were closed. Volunteer applicants follow a separate process, with station catchment, training and assessment requirements. The City lists an eight-minute respond-to-station catchment, a G-or-higher licence with zero demerit points when applying and a later DZ requirement. Read the volunteer page linked below for your station and licence deadline. Volunteer service doesn’t provide an automatic transfer into a career position.
Hamilton firefighter salary and progression
For career firefighters hired under the post–April 11, 2019 progression, Schedule A of the City/Local 288 agreement publishes these annual base rates, effective January 1, 2026:
- Year 1 — probation, first 12 months (65%): $78,410.80.
- Year 2 — fourth class (70%): $84,442.40.
- Year 3 — third class (80%): $96,505.60.
- Year 4 — second class (90%): $108,568.80.
- Year 5 — first class (100%): $120,632.00.
The separate 55% training rate appears in the grandfathered schedule, not this new-hire progression. Advancement requires written, oral and practical tests under Schedule C. Prior full-time career experience may receive wage-step credit under Article 14.5; confirm placement in your offer.
These rates apply to 2026. Look for a successor agreement after December 31, 2026. Overtime and recognition pay are additional; Sunshine List earnings include more than base salary.
Minimum qualifications
Start with the full-time requirements below. Check them against the posting when applications open, especially the licence, certificate and document deadlines. Volunteer hiring follows different rules.
- 01Grade 12 or approved equivalent
- Keep a readable copy of your Ontario secondary-school diploma or approved equivalency. For education completed outside Canada, use the City’s instructions for acceptable credential assessment.
- 02Class DZ and a clean driving record
- For full-time applications, you need a valid Ontario DZ licence with zero demerit points and a driving record satisfactory to the City. The volunteer G-to-DZ allowance is separate.
- 03Current Standard First Aid and CPR
- Prepare Standard First Aid and at least Basic Rescuer or CPR Level C documentation. The City’s general page specifies training dated within 12 months before application and certificates remaining valid through hire. Check both course dates and expiry dates.
- 04Fire certifications
- Hamilton’s general page refers to relevant provincial certifications but doesn’t give a full checklist. The archived September 2026 listing also doesn’t set out an NFPA/OFAI application package. Use the next posting to check exactly which certificates you need.
- 05English communication and judgement
- Be able to communicate clearly, follow procedures and make calm decisions under pressure. You can draw on examples from public service, customer service, trades, coaching or other work.
- 06Physical readiness and working conditions
- The role requires sustained demanding work, learning rescue techniques, and working at heights and in confined spaces. Prepare for the actual assessment protocols and attend the components specified in your invitation.
- 07Vision and medical suitability
- The City lists at least 20/30 corrected or 20/40 uncorrected vision, with both eyes tested together, normal depth perception and colour vision. Your medical suitability is assessed during hiring.
- 08Background and conditional checks
- Hamilton requires a satisfactory vulnerable sector check and addresses convictions without a granted pardon. Follow the City’s instructions for police screening, medical assessment, references and the driver’s abstract when requested.
- 09Shift work and teamwork
- Be available for rotating shifts and comfortable taking direction, following departmental procedures and sharing station responsibilities. Reliability includes everyday tasks, training and professional conduct between calls.
What strengthens your application
Emergency-response or firefighting experience and extra fire or rescue qualifications are assets in the archived career posting. Here are ways to explain that experience in your application and interview.
Emergency-response experience
Describe a call or task, your role, the outcome and what you learned. Be clear about what you did and how you worked within your training.
Teamwork
Prepare an example of supporting a teammate, accepting feedback or working through a disagreement. Explain your part and how it helped the team.
Helping people
Think of a time you listened carefully, explained something clearly or adapted to someone’s needs. Customer service, public education and everyday resident interactions can all give you useful examples.
Practical skills and reliability
Talk about equipment checks, maintenance, careful records or consistent training. Explain what you were responsible for and how you made sure the work was done safely.
Aptitude & physical testing
Hamilton uses two different testing stages: an NTN entry assessment and later FSO testing. FSO is Firefighter Services of Ontario. Check your invitation for the exact NTN format and FSO components before booking tests or choosing study material.
Which NTN format are you writing?
NTN offers video-based FireTEAM and Firefighter Express. Express includes written situational-judgment scenarios, image-based mechanical questions, reading, mental math and a Role Fitness Questionnaire. Prepare for the format named in your invitation; the September 2026 update below explains the reported change.
FSO’s separate CPS aptitude exam
FSO’s exam covers oral information, reading, mathematical ability and mechanical aptitude. Its published pass mark is 70%. Materials and scrap paper are supplied; calculators, phones and smart watches aren’t allowed. Hamilton identifies this later assessment as CPS. Our CPS practice is aimed at this stage and doesn’t cover NTN Express.
Know the physical assessment events
FSO offers a clinical assessment and the eight-event CPAT. The clinical assessment covers aerobic fitness, body composition, flexibility and sit-ups. CPAT is a continuous job-related course with a 10-minute-20-second limit. Read the orientation and check the equipment, clothing and failure rules before attending.
Heights, medical and water assessments
Hamilton’s published assessment outline includes an acrophobia component. FSO also offers vision/hearing testing and a 15-minute unassisted tread-water test. Your invitation determines which of these Hamilton requires and how swimming is handled.
Plan the assessment day as a whole
In the applicant-reported September 2026 process, Hamilton required the FSO components together in one day, with swimming handled separately. FSO lists six-month clinical validity and one year for its other standard components; departments can require more recent results. Check with the City before using an earlier assessment.
Written test preparation
Getting ready for the FSO aptitude exam?
Work through original CPS practice questions and explanations for the later written stage. Use them to find skills you need to improve. This practice doesn’t cover NTN Express or provide an official testing result.
Try our free CPS practice testNeed the licence prerequisite?
Work on the Class D and air-brake knowledge tests alongside your driver training. You’ll still need the official tests and licence before applying.
Ontario DZ written-test preparationThe recruitment process
Work through the stages as the City invites you. Each invitation explains what to book, what to bring and when it is due. The sequence and accepted earlier results can vary between competitions.
- 1
City application and screening
Apply during an advertised career recruitment window with your résumé and completed questionnaire. Review your answers, keep a copy and save the confirmation. Only selected applicants are invited to continue.
- 2
Entry assessment
Complete the entry test named in your Hamilton invitation. Check the registration, ID and technical instructions, and keep the confirmation with your application records.
- 3
FSO applicant assessment
When invited, book the required written and physical assessments at your expense. Follow Hamilton’s component list and timing. This FSO stage is separate from the earlier NTN test.
- 4
Behavioural interview and psychological assessment
Prepare examples of judgment, teamwork, service, integrity and learning for the behavioural interview. Psychological assessment is a separate step. Your invitations will explain the appointments and format; see the dated update for the September 2026 experience.
- 5
Conditional checks and recruit training
Complete police screening, the City-arranged medical assessment, employment references and the driver’s abstract when requested. Hamilton describes an 18-week recruit-training program beginning at employment. Your offer will set out your conditions and training dates.
Get your documents ready
Keep your education records, licence, First Aid/CPR and requested certificates in one folder. Use clear filenames and open each scan before uploading. Hamilton’s published interview instructions ask for originals plus one copy of your diploma/equivalency and First Aid/CPR evidence. Your invitation may request other documents. Ask former supervisors about references in advance, check their contact details and submit the City’s consent form when requested.
Your application checklist
Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.
Prepare for the behavioural interview
Prepare a few real examples: helping someone under pressure, handling disagreement, following a safety rule, receiving feedback and correcting a mistake. Set the scene briefly, explain what you were responsible for, then focus on your actions, the result and what you learned. Hamilton names trust, honesty, integrity, compassion, empathy and teamwork as values. Show those through what you did, including how you responded when something went wrong.
Recruitment updates and testing-format changes
Reviewed October 25, 2026: full-time applications were closed. The September competition closed September 9, 2026; no next career opening, class size or hire date was confirmed. A September 2026 applicant reported NTN Express before FSO, replacing the full video-based NTN test used in earlier competitions. The same applicant described the required FSO components together in one day, with swimming separate, and one behavioural interview separate from psychological assessment. These details come from participant experience and weren’t independently confirmed in the public Hamilton material reviewed. The City’s general page still describes video-based entry testing. NTN confirms Express is a distinct format. Use your City and FSO invitations for the current arrangements.

A September 2026 applicant reported writing NTN Express before the FSO stage. Earlier competitions used the full video-based NTN test, which Hamilton’s general page still describes. Use the test named in your own invitation.
Do all FSO tests have to be completed on one day?
In the applicant-reported September 2026 process, the required FSO components were completed together in one day, with swimming separate. Check Hamilton’s invitation for the package, swim arrangements and whether earlier results are accepted.
How many interviews does Hamilton have?
Recent applicant experience describes one behavioural interview, with psychological assessment separate. Hamilton’s public outline lists an in-person interview and psychological assessment. Your invitations will confirm the appointments and format.

For full-time hiring, Hamilton specifies DZ with zero demerit points when you apply. The G-to-DZ allowance belongs to the separate volunteer process.
Do I need NFPA 1001 or OFAI certificates before applying?
Check the live career posting for the exact list. The archived September 2026 listing doesn’t set out an NFPA/OFAI application package, while Hamilton’s general page refers to relevant provincial certifications. Ask the City about any unclear equivalencies.
