The department at a glance
Want to become a Kitchener firefighter? Start by reading the actual competition, then work backwards through the qualifications, testing and paperwork. This guide covers career suppression hiring and helps you prepare between postings. Kitchener and Waterloo recruit separately; a certificate accepted by one city is not automatically accepted by the other. Kitchener’s general careers page and its 2026 posting differ on OFAI and medical-training requirements. We explain those differences below so you can ask the right questions before spending money or submitting an application.
More than firefighting
Kitchener Fire combines emergency response, prevention and public education. Its published station directory lists seven operating stations, with headquarters on Strasburg Road. The department also provides dispatch services to neighbouring municipalities. For applicants, that means preparing to communicate clearly, care for equipment, learn unfamiliar buildings and support the crew during routine station work. Build examples that show how you work consistently, rather than describing only dramatic emergency calls.
Pay & working pattern
First-class firefighter — annual base rate · $119,632 per year
Effective January 1, 2026
January 2026 annual base rate, Appendix A, printed page 52. Fifth class ranges from $65,798 to $71,779. See the salary progression for the training step and later classifications.
The agreement describes 24-hour suppression shifts averaging 42 hours weekly. Confirm the assigned rotation and recruit-training schedule in the posting and offer.
Kitchener firefighter salary and progression
Appendix A of the 2023–2026 agreement lists these annual base rates effective January 1, 2026 (printed page 52). The fifth-class entry and maximum rates are separate steps:
- Fifth class, Step 1 / recruit training (55%): $65,798.
- Fifth class, maximum (60%): $71,779.
- Fourth class (70%): $83,742.
- Third class (80%): $95,706.
- Second class (90%): $107,669.
- First class (100%): $119,632.
Article 11 places recruits at 55% during recruit class, then 60% for the remainder of the first employment year. Later advancement depends on examinations, including written, oral, practical and maps/streets components. Overtime and service-related pay can affect earnings. These are 2026 rates; check the successor agreement for a later intake.
Minimum qualifications
Use the live posting as your final checklist. The items below distinguish the archived 2026 competition from the broader City careers summary; a future competition can change the evidence or timing.
- 01Firefighter education
- The 2026 posting required NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II from a recognized pre-service or accredited institutional program.
- 02OFAI certificates
- The 2026 competition requested Stages 1 and 2, valid as of April 2026. The general careers page says all three stages; verify the next posting’s exact list.
- 03First responder training and CPR
- The 2026 posting specified Emergency First Responder or EMR-equivalent training and Health Care Provider CPR. The general page’s Standard First Aid/CPR C summary is broader.
- 04DZ licence and abstract
- The 2026 posting required a valid DZ in good standing and an abstract at interview. Confirm the current timing and acceptable driving record directly.
- 05Screening conditions
- A satisfactory vulnerable-sector check was a condition of employment. Follow the offer’s date restriction before ordering a time-sensitive check.
- 06Work and operational readiness
- Show reliable employment, teamwork and courteous communication under pressure. The 2026 posting also required swimming ability; a swim certificate was listed as preferred.
What strengthens your application
Assets strengthen an application but do not replace mandatory qualifications. Explain how you have used a skill, not just which certificate you hold.
Previous firefighting and related work
Explain your responsibilities, safe habits and what you learned from feedback. Include volunteer experience accurately.
Education and inspection
The 2026 posting preferred NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator and NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector. Describe how your learning supports public safety.
Swimming and boating
OFAI swimming and a Pleasure Craft Operator Card were 2026 preferences. Do not confuse a preferred certificate with the separate requirement to be able to swim.
Trades, mechanical ability and service
Use evidence from repair, tools, practical problem-solving or community work. Show what you contributed and how you supported others.
Aptitude & physical testing
Kitchener uses an OFAI pathway. Its general page says all three stages; the archived 2026 posting specifically requested Stages 1 and 2. Check the current competition before assuming either list applies indefinitely.
OFAI Stage One — FACT
OFAI describes 110 multiple-choice items in up to three hours, covering reading, mathematics, maps, writing and personal characteristics. Practise the underlying skills and use the official guide to understand the assessment.
OFAI Stage Two
Track hearing, vision and the Encapsulated Treadmill Test separately. OFAI lists two-year hearing/vision validity and six-month ETT validity. Municipal acceptance dates can be more specific; check each certificate.
Verify the current Stage Three requirement
FPAT and technical skills are distinct assessments. The City’s general page lists Stage Three, but the 2026 competition specifically named only Stages 1 and 2. Ask recruitment to resolve unclear requirements before booking.
Ability and certification are different
The 2026 posting required swimming ability and listed the OFAI swim certificate as preferred. OFAI now calls swimming Stage Four and makes it recruitment-dependent. Do not automatically import Waterloo’s swim requirement or an FSO testing rule.

Use these milestones to organize your preparation. Invitations determine the actual sequence and any extra assessments. No fixed future number of interviews or MMI format was verified.
- 1
Application
Submit online using the required format
The 2026 competition imposed a three-page combined cover-letter/resume limit and a specific resume order. Read the next posting before reusing those instructions.
- 2
Screening and invitations
Watch for City communications
The City’s general process includes screening followed by interview(s) and/or job-related testing. Only selected applicants are contacted. Keep copies and monitor spam folders.
- 3
Interview and references
Bring the requested evidence
Prepare clear examples of judgement, teamwork and service. The 2026 fire posting requested an abstract at interview. Follow your invitation for format, documents and any additional assessment.
- 4
Conditional checks and training
Read every offer condition
The 2026 competition used a candidate pool and named a recruit-class start. A place in a pool is not a guaranteed job. Confirm screening, certificate validity, training attendance and your own start date.
Make your application easy to assess
The 2026 fire posting required a combined cover letter and resume of no more than three pages. Its resume order was: work experience; general education; community involvement or volunteer experience; then fire-related education and courses, including OFAI certification and expiry dates. Follow the new posting if those instructions change. A generic City instruction that a cover letter is optional should not override a fire-specific application requirement.
Make every line earn its space. Show responsibilities, a concrete contribution and the skills relevant to the role. Keep a separate document tracker with the credential, issuer, level, expiry and submission location. For interviews, prepare a mistake you corrected, a difficult public interaction, a practical problem and a teamwork example. Explain your own actions and what you learned. These are independent preparation suggestions, not predicted questions or an official scoring rubric.
Your application checklist
Use this preparation checklist alongside the current posting. Checking an item does not confirm eligibility.
Recruitment history and what to watch next
Reviewed October 26, 2026. The archived 2026 competition ran April 21–May 3, with June interviews and a September recruit class. Those dates describe a past competition. The original job page is no longer available, and no next application window or 2027 class date was verified. Use the City jobs portal to confirm new vacancies.
Kitchener’s Station 8 project combines a new downtown fire station with housing. The City’s July 2026 update targets the station opening in 2028, subject to project conditions. This is useful context for a growing service, not evidence of an announced recruitment. Its current department directory lists seven operating stations. Keep future projects separate from today’s station count and hiring status.

Common questions
Guidance for Kitchener applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Kitchener hiring firefighters now?
The archived 2026 competition closed May 3 and its original job page is no longer available. No upcoming 2027 application window was verified at the October 26, 2026 review. Check the City jobs portal for new competitions.
Does Kitchener require all three OFAI stages?
The general City page says all three. The 2026 fire posting specifically requested Stages 1 and 2. Use the current posting and obtain clarification when the sources differ; do not assume a previous competition’s exception continues.
Which written test should I prepare for?
OFAI Stage One is FACT. It is separate from FSO’s CPS pathway and NTN. Review the current posting before buying preparation or booking official assessments.
Is Standard First Aid and CPR C sufficient?
The general page lists that baseline, while the 2026 posting requested responder-level training and Health Care Provider CPR. Check the next posting’s exact medical-training requirement and ask about equivalencies before relying on a lower-level certificate.
Is the OFAI swim certificate mandatory?
It was listed as preferred in the 2026 posting, alongside a separate requirement to be able to swim. That distinction matters. Check the live competition before assuming another municipality’s certificate rule applies.
How should I format the application?
The 2026 fire posting required online submission, a combined cover letter/resume of no more than three pages and a specified resume order. See the application section for the historical order; follow any updated instructions in the new posting.
How much do Kitchener firefighters earn?
The January 2026 grid lists $65,798 at the first fifth-class step, $71,779 at fifth-class maximum and $119,632 for first class annually. Later classifications and conditional advancement are explained in the salary section.
Does Kitchener use MMI interviews?
No fixed MMI format or number of fire interview rounds was verified. The City’s general process allows interview(s) and/or testing. Prepare real examples and follow the invitation’s timing and instructions.
