How to become a Oakville firefighter
- 1
Check your qualifications
Make a checklist of what you have, what expires soon and what you still need. Start with training or licence steps that take time to finish. Check Oakville’s OFAI and swim requirements before booking tests.
- 2
Get your application ready
Prepare your resume and cover letter as one file. Make your qualifications and relevant experience easy to find, and take time with the online questionnaire. Keep your certificate scans together for later requests.
- 3
Prepare beyond the written test
Work on aptitude skills, fitness, supervised swimming and interview examples while you wait for the next posting. That way, an invitation gives you time to refine your preparation.
The department at a glance
Thinking about applying to Oakville Fire? Start with your qualifications, OFAI certificates and swimming requirements. Once those are in place, focus on your application, interviews and the department’s assessments. The latest application window is closed. This guide explains what the 2026 intake required and how you can prepare for the next opportunity.
More than firefighting
Oakville firefighters respond to fires, medical calls and rescues in a growing Lake Ontario community. Between calls, they train, check equipment, help with inspections and teach fire safety. As you prepare, think about how your experience would help you contribute both on a call and around the station.

Minimum qualifications
These requirements come from the 2026 intake. Use the next posting to check for changes. Make a checklist of the qualifications you have, the ones you still need and any certificates that will expire soon.
- 01Firefighter training and education
- The archived 2026 posting required NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II training from an accredited institution or fire department, plus an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Keep copies of both ready.
- 02OFAI certificates
- The 2026 intake required Stage 1 FACT and Stage 2 hearing, vision and encapsulated treadmill certificates. Stage 2 had to be current at closing. Oakville accepted an expired valid Stage 1 certificate. See below for how it handled Stage 3.
- 03Swimming and first aid
- The Town accepted either Canadian Swim to Survive or OFAI swim certification, plus current Standard First Aid and CPR. Oakville also conducts its own in-house swim assessment in addition to the required swim certificate.
- 04DZ licence and driving record
- The 2026 posting required a valid, unrestricted Ontario Class D licence with Z endorsement. Applicants with six or more demerit points were ineligible. Start any licence upgrade early so you’re ready when applications open.
- 05Screening and medical checks
- You’ll need police vulnerable-sector screening, medical review and immunization records as directed. The archived posting required a satisfactory police check dated within 30 days as an employment condition. Wait for instructions before ordering time-sensitive checks.
- 06Communication, teamwork and service
- Be able to communicate clearly in English under pressure, work with a crew and show a strong work ethic. Prepare examples of following through on a task, helping others and communicating respectfully.
What strengthens your application
The 2026 posting listed these as preferred qualifications. Include the ones you have and explain how you’ve used them. You’ll still need to meet every minimum requirement.
Education and technical rescue
Postsecondary education and relevant NFPA Operations or Technician qualifications were preferred assets. If you list a qualification, be ready to explain what you learned and how you’ve used it.
Emergency services and practical experience
Related experience includes firefighting, dispatch, paramedicine, police, military, medical care, social services, trades and heavy equipment. Pick examples that show safe decisions, clear communication or dependable practical work.
Medical, language and trade skills
EMR, additional languages and trade qualifications were also assets. Explain your level of training or proficiency and give an example of how you’ve used the skill to help someone or complete a task.
Community involvement
Tell the Town about your volunteering: what you did, who it helped and how long you were involved. Choose examples you can talk about comfortably in an interview.
Aptitude & physical testing
For the 2026 intake, you needed OFAI Stages 1 and 2 before applying. Oakville arranged physical, technical and behavioural assessments later. Swimming involved an accepted certificate and the department’s own assessment. Here’s how those pieces fit together.
FACT: OFAI Stage 1
OFAI describes 110 multiple-choice items, up to three hours, with aptitude and character components. Results are pass/fail. Try practice questions first to see where you need work, then review the explanations and practise under time pressure. Answer character questions honestly.
Have all three Stage 2 certificates ready
All three Stage 2 certificates had to be current at the 2026 closing date. Book early enough for processing and any follow-up. OFAI’s instructions explain the forms, equipment, appointments and accommodation requests.
Oakville arranged its own assessments later
An OFAI Stage 3 certificate wasn’t required to apply in 2026. Oakville arranged its own FPAT, technical and behavioural assessments for selected candidates later in the process. Check the next posting before paying for an extra assessment.
Your certificate and Oakville’s own assessment
The 2026 intake accepted either the Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim to Survive certificate or the OFAI swim test. Candidates also had to pass Oakville’s own in-house swim assessment before an offer. Prepare for that later assessment with supervised pool practice and qualified instruction.
Plan your assessment day
Before each assessment, check the time, location, clothing, ID and forms you need. Allow for fees, travel and time off work. Read the provider’s medical and accommodation instructions early, and ask through the stated contact if anything is unclear.
Written test preparation
Getting ready for the FACT?
Try original practice questions, work through the explanations and spend more time on the skills you find difficult. Firefighter Academy is independent of OFAI and FPSI. You’ll still need to pass the official assessment.

Practise Class D, air-brake and road-sign questions alongside Ontario’s official handbooks. Allow time for the full licensing process so you have DZ by the required deadline.
Prepare for the DZ knowledge testsThe recruitment process
Here’s a preparation roadmap through Oakville’s hiring process. Keep your documents ready early, then use the time between invitations to practise, stay fit and prepare for the next step.
- 1
Check your qualifications and certificates
Make sure your entry qualifications are in place before applying.
Keep copies together and note the expiry dates. Start with anything that takes longer to complete, such as training or a licence upgrade.
- 2
Online application and screening
Submit the requested application materials and questionnaire.
For 2026, Oakville asked for the resume and cover letter together, with certificates kept for later requests. Read through everything before submitting and save a copy with the confirmation email.
- 3
First formal interview
Selected applicants meet the selection committee.
Prepare examples of helping people, working in a team, solving problems and learning from experience. Explain what you did and why, then connect that experience to the firefighter’s role.
- 4
Second formal interview
Selected candidates return for a second interview.
Review the application you submitted and practise answering follow-up questions. Keep your answers natural. The Town describes formal interviews; an MMI format hasn’t been confirmed.
- 5
Department assessments
Physical, technical, behavioural and swim assessments follow for selected candidates.
Your invitation will explain the activities, schedule, clothing and documents. Build fitness steadily and practise physical skills with qualified supervision.
- 6
Conditional offer and checks
Complete the checks and conditions stated in your offer.
The Town lists references, medical review, immunization records, qualification checks, vulnerable-sector screening and a recent driver’s abstract. Let your references know and arrange dated documents when requested.
- 7
Recruit training and probation
Successful hires begin the department’s recruit program and a 12-month probation.
Be ready to learn, keep your qualifications current and act on feedback. Pay progresses through the firefighter classes under the collective agreement.
How to prepare for Oakville firefighter interviews
Prepare a few examples you know well. Briefly explain the situation and your responsibility, then focus on what you did, the result and what you learned. Practise talking through them aloud so you can answer naturally when a question takes a different angle.
- Use examples from work, school, volunteering or emergency services. Make your own role clear.
- Include a time you received feedback or made a mistake. Explain what you changed afterwards.
- Learn about Oakville’s fire, medical, rescue and public-education work. Be ready to explain why you want to serve this community.
- Ask someone to follow up on your answers: Why did you choose that approach? What else could you have done? What would you change?
Try these original practice questions: Tell us about a time you helped a team recover from a mistake. What would you do if you noticed an equipment concern before a task? How would you explain a fire-safety message to a frustrated resident? These are practice prompts we wrote, not Oakville interview questions.

Is Oakville hiring firefighters now?
The Town’s recruitment page was marked closed when reviewed October 30, 2026. Its latest published application window ended September 4, 2026 at noon. No future opening date has been verified. Check the Town’s page and careers portal for a new competition.
Did Oakville require OFAI Stage 3 to apply?
No. The 2026 intake required OFAI Stages 1 and 2 to apply. Oakville arranged physical, technical and behavioural assessments for selected candidates later in the process. Check the next posting before booking Stage 3.
Which swim certificate did Oakville accept?
For 2026, either Canadian Swim to Survive or the OFAI swim test was accepted. You also had to pass Oakville’s own in-house swim assessment before an offer. Holding the certificate didn’t remove that later requirement.
Can I use an expired FACT certificate?
Oakville accepted an expired valid OFAI Stage 1 FACT certificate for the 2026 intake. Check the next posting before relying on that exception again.
What is the Oakville firefighter salary?
The filed collective agreement lists first-class annual base pay of $123,734 and probationary annual base pay of $74,240 effective July 1, 2026. The progression section lists the intermediate classes. Overtime, recognition pay and benefits are separate.
Did the 2026 intake require NFPA 1001?
Yes. The archived 2026 posting required completed NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II training from an accredited institution or fire department, even though new hires also attend recruit training.
Is the Oakville interview an MMI?
The Town describes first and second formal interviews with the selection committee. It hasn’t confirmed an MMI format in the public material. Your invitation will explain the timing and any exercises.
Should I attach certificates to the initial application?
For 2026, the Town said to submit your resume and cover letter together and keep certificates for later requests. Have the scans ready in a separate folder.
How long does it take to reach first class?
The agreement provides 12 months of probation, followed by 12 months in each of fourth, third and second class before eligibility for first class. That is roughly four years from entry, subject to the agreement’s promotion and examination requirements.
How should I prepare before the next posting?
Start with missing qualifications and certificates that expire soon. Set aside time each week for aptitude practice, fitness, supervised swimming and interview examples. Keep an application draft ready to tailor when the next posting opens.
