The department at a glance
Pickering hires full-time firefighters through City competitions. Its recruitment closing January 9, 2026 required current OFAI Stages One, Two and Three, including the swim test. That makes certificate planning one of the first jobs to tackle before an application opens. Use this guide to prepare between intakes. The January 2026 deadline is historical; check the City careers page for a new vacancy and read its requirements in full.
More than firefighting
Pickering Fire Services operates from five stations. The role combines fire suppression and rescue with medical calls, training, pre-incident planning, public education and daily vehicle, equipment and station care.
Pay & working pattern
First-class firefighter — July 2024 base · $111,253 per year
Effective July 1, 2024
Last verified published schedule: first class $111,253 annually; probationary $66,751.80. The later posting closing January 2026 still labelled its starting salary as a 2024 rate. These are dated base figures, not a verified 2026 pay scale; a newer settlement may change them. Overtime and recognition pay are additional.
The referenced posting used a rotating 24-hour shift system, including weekends and holidays. It also listed benefits and an OMERS pension.
Minimum qualifications
These points are drawn from the City posting that closed January 9, 2026. A new advertisement may change the qualification or certificate-validity rules.
- 01Education and fire credentials
- The posting listed secondary school plus recognised college pre-service training, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience. NFPA 1001 I and II with IFSAC or Pro Board certification was required.
- 02OFAI stages and swimming
- Current CTS Stages One, Two and Three, including the swim test, were required through the competition’s closing date. Applicants paid the testing costs.
- 03DZ licence
- A valid Ontario Class D licence with Z endorsement was required, with consent for a driver’s abstract. A clean record was preferred.
- 04First Aid, CPR and EMR training
- Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR-C were required. The posting asked for willingness to take EMR training; it did not list an existing EMR certificate as a minimum.
- 05Physical and shift readiness
- Be ready for prolonged, demanding work and rotating 24-hour shifts. The role calls for clear English communication, problem solving and professional public service.
- 06Employment checks
- A Criminal Reference check was a condition of employment. Read the next posting and any offer for the timing and exact documents required.
What strengthens your application
Pickering’s posting identifies several useful assets. Connect them to specific work you have done instead of listing broad claims about being a good candidate.
Emergency services experience
Previous emergency services work was an asset. Show what you learned about working safely, communicating under pressure and supporting a team.
Mechanical and computer skills
Practical experience with hydraulic, electrical and hand tools can help. The role also involves computer-based training and Windows applications.
Local knowledge and public service
Knowledge of Pickering’s streets, municipal buildings and hydrants was preferred. Pair local knowledge with examples of calm, helpful service to the public.
Aptitude & physical testing
The referenced competition required the complete OFAI CTS package, including swimming, at the applicant’s expense. All parts had to remain valid through its closing date. Use the new posting’s dates for a future application.
FACT written assessment
FACT measures aptitude and personal characteristics. Read OFAI’s current assessment guide, then use timed practice to identify the written skills that need attention.
Hearing, vision and treadmill screening
Review OFAI’s current medical and booking instructions. Check which results expire first; do not plan all renewals around a single certificate date.
Physical aptitude and technical skills
Prepare from the current OFAI guides and your practical training. Physical performance and technical skills are assessed separately from the written test.
OFAI swim certificate required in the reference intake
Pickering’s posting explicitly included swimming. A certificate accepted by another municipality does not automatically satisfy Pickering. Recheck the next advertisement before substituting any alternative.
Written test preparation
Get ready for OFAI Stage One
Try a timed FACT practice test, review the mistakes and revisit the skills that slow you down. Use OFAI’s candidate instructions for the actual assessment rules.
Practise the FACT testThe recruitment process
The posting confirms the online application, required credentials, interview contact and employment checks. It does not publish a complete scored selection sequence. Follow City invitations for any additional assessments.

Check that both files open correctly and that the final submission is complete.

The posting says a fuller job description is provided to candidates selected for interview.

An MMI format, fixed question count or scoring threshold has not been verified for Pickering.
- 5
Complete requested employment checks
Follow instructions for the Criminal Reference check and driver’s abstract. Read the conditions and training expectations in any offer.
The City says only candidates selected for interview are contacted.

Common questions
Guidance for Pickering applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.
Is Pickering hiring firefighters now?
Use the City employment page for current vacancies. The posting discussed here closed January 9, 2026. Its requirements remain useful preparation, but that PDF does not represent an open competition.
Does Pickering use FACT or CPS?
The referenced posting required OFAI CTS Stages One, Two and Three. FACT is OFAI Stage One. It did not identify a separate CPS test.
Is swimming part of Pickering recruitment?
Yes. The reference posting explicitly included the OFAI swim test, with certifications valid through the closing date. Check the next intake for any change.
Do I need EMR certification before applying?
The referenced posting required Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR-C, plus willingness to participate in EMR training. Do not turn that training commitment into an extra entry requirement.
What is a Pickering firefighter’s salary?
The July 2024 agreement schedule lists annual base pay of $111,253 at first class and $66,751.80 on probation. The later recruitment PDF still used 2024 starting pay. A newer 2026 scale has not been verified here.
What interview format does Pickering use?
The public posting confirms interview selection but does not name a format. Prepare relevant examples and follow the invitation. Claims of an MMI or a specific number of stations should be confirmed with the City.
