01

The department at a glance

Richmond Fire-Rescue hires career firefighters through a competitive process that includes an online assessment, physical testing and several interviews. Its 2026 intake is complete. Use this guide to prepare for the next opening, then check the new posting for any changes before applying.

More than firefighting

The job combines emergency response with training, equipment checks, public education and station duties. Richmond operates seven fire halls, with specialist resources for hazardous materials and technical rescue. It also provides backup support to Vancouver International Airport, which has its own airport firefighting service. Suppression crews work 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, then five days off; shifts run from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Is Richmond Fire-Rescue hiring?

The 2026 hiring process is complete, according to Richmond’s official careers page, checked November 3, 2026. The City has not announced the next application window. You can use the time between intakes to finish qualifications, improve your swimming and fitness, and gather application documents. Check the linked careers page for the next opening before booking tests or making travel arrangements.

Richmond firefighter salary

The archived 2026 advertisement quoted $3,150.84 biweekly at 2024 rates: about $81,922 per year when multiplied by 26 pay periods. This figure comes from a third-party copy of the posting, linked below, and is a historical advertised rate rather than a verified current first-class salary. Richmond Council announced a renewed agreement covering 2025–2026 on October 13, 2026. The current first-class and recruit wage table has not been verified for this guide. Check the latest City posting or IAFF Local 1286 wage schedule before using a salary figure for financial planning.

02

Minimum qualifications

Have the basic qualifications and supporting documents ready when you apply. The City’s 2026 hiring guide separates these requirements from preferred qualifications; do not assume an asset is mandatory.

01Work eligibility
You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. The 2026 application checklist specifically said work visas were not accepted; check the next intake’s eligibility wording and required proof.
02Grade 12 or equivalent
Upload proof of secondary-school completion or its accepted equivalent.
03Class 3 licence with air brakes
Richmond requires a valid BC Class 3 licence, automatic or manual, with air brakes, or an equivalent licence. Include both sides of the licence and confirm out-of-province equivalency with the City.
04Safe driving record
Provide a current driver’s record covering five years and demonstrating responsible driving.
05First Responder Level 3
Have First Responder Level 3 or an accepted equivalent. If your certificate uses a different provincial or course designation, confirm acceptance before applying.
06Fitness, swimming and medical suitability
Be able to pass Richmond’s fitness and swim assessments, the required medical examination and police/background checks.
03

What strengthens your application

Richmond’s 2026 guide lists the following as preferred qualifications. They can strengthen an application, but the guide places them separately from the basic requirements.

Fire training and relevant experience

The 2026 guide lists approved NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II training, at least one year of work experience (1,820 hours), and experience in emergency-service settings as preferred qualifications.

Education and additional skills

Post-secondary education, an apprenticeship and relevant rescue, hazardous-materials, incident-command or other fire-service courses can support your application. Bronze Star swimming certification or higher is also listed as an asset.

Community service and communication

Richmond values volunteer experience, additional languages, understanding of its diverse communities, and a sustained commitment to fitness and wellness. Use specific examples from your own experience.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Richmond uses its own selection process. The latest guide specifies an online BL Associates assessment, a swim test and a fitness assessment. A test or certificate accepted by another department does not automatically replace Richmond’s assessments.

Online BL Associates assessment

3–4 hours online; $400 fee in 2026

Shortlisted applicants register for BL Associates’ Personal–Competency Assessment for the Job of Firefighter. The 2026 candidate fee was non-refundable. Follow the invitation for registration and technical instructions. Results from the previous 12 months may be eligible for transfer; the City confirms eligibility.

Swim assessment

100 m swim + five minutes treading water

Complete a continuous front crawl/freestyle swim, immediately followed by treading water. Allow less than 30 minutes for the appointment. Swim and fitness testing take place on separate days in Richmond; neither carried a candidate fee in 2026. A swimming certificate does not replace this assessment.

Fitness assessment

Stage 7 shuttle minimum + ten job simulations

Ascent Lifestyle Management Inc. administers the 20 m shuttle run and job simulations; allow three to four hours. Shuttle scoring continues up to Stage 10. Tasks cover confined-space crawling, aerial climbing, hose/stair carries, ladder work, a rope pull, hose advance, a 200 lb drag, forced entry and extrication-tool handling. Some are timed and others pass/fail. Aim beyond the minimum.

Occupational medical

NFPA 1582 medical; candidate pays

The guide specifies a roughly 90-minute assessment through Ultima Medical Services, including vision, hearing and lung-function checks. It does not publish an exact price. If testing costs create financial hardship, candidates can explain their circumstances to fire@richmond.ca; assistance is not guaranteed.

Written test preparation

Build general aptitude skills

Our FACT practice covers general aptitude skills. FACT is a different test and this is not a BL Associates simulation. Use Richmond’s candidate instructions for the actual assessment format and answer personal or behavioural items honestly.

05

The recruitment process

The steps below follow Richmond’s 2026 hiring guide. Only shortlisted candidates move forward, and the City may change the sequence, dates or requirements in a later intake.

  1. 1

    Apply through the City portal

Submit the online application and supporting documents before the deadline. Richmond does not accept applications by email, fax or paper.

Check every upload opens correctly and keep the combined attachments within the stated limit.

  2. 2

    Complete the written assessment

Shortlisted applicants receive instructions to register for the online BL Associates assessment.

Budget for the candidate fee and confirm any previous-result transfer through the invitation process.

  3. 3

    Attend fitness and swim testing

Complete the separate physical assessments in Richmond over two days. The order may vary.

Keep both days available and follow the City’s instructions for clothing, equipment and arrival.

  4. 4

    Panel interview

Richmond describes a structured interview with predominantly behavioural questions.

Prepare examples of teamwork, judgment, conflict, public service and learning from mistakes. Explain your own actions and what happened.

  5. 5

    Department familiarization

Attend a day with the department to meet staff and learn more about the work.

Read about Richmond’s services and communities beforehand, and bring thoughtful questions about the role.

  6. 6

    Fire Chief interview

A separate interview takes place with the Fire Chief or a designate.

Be ready to explain why Richmond, what you understand about the job and how your experience would help the team.

  7. 7

    Background checks and medical

The process includes employment references, education verification, a police check, an updated driving record and the occupational medical.

Keep reference contact details current and follow the City’s directions on when to obtain or renew documents.

  8. 8

    Offer and probation

Successful candidates receive an offer and join the department’s recruit training. Richmond lists a 12-month probationary period.

Continue maintaining the qualifications required for employment. Passing a single stage does not guarantee an offer.

Preparing a stronger Richmond application

Start with the documents that can take time: licence upgrades, driving records, school equivalency and accepted first-responder credentials. Keep a clear record of work hours, volunteer commitments and certificates so you can show how you meet the posting. Ask employment references whether they are willing and available before you list them. For interviews, practise explaining real situations in a few minutes: what happened, what you did, why you chose that approach and what you learned. Learn about Richmond’s neighbourhoods, industrial areas, seven fire halls and specialist teams so your reasons for applying are specific to the department.
