The department at a glance

Prepare for a career with Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services (RHFES). This guide explains the candidate-pool model, eligibility requirements, City-organized testing and interviews, with a practical plan you can use between recruitment campaigns.

More than firefighting

Career firefighters combine fire-ground operations, technical rescue and medical response with training, equipment readiness, station duties, documentation and public education. Build an application that shows both operational preparation and a consistent commitment to serving people across Richmond Hill’s six-station service.

02

Minimum qualifications

These requirements summarize the City’s 2025 information guide and candidate-pool posting. Compare every credential and document deadline with the live posting when the next competition opens.

01Age, work eligibility and education
The reviewed criteria require age 18+, legal eligibility to work in Canada and an Ontario secondary-school diploma or approved equivalent.
02Firefighter I and II
Provide NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II certification or the accepted grandfathering equivalent. Check the live posting for the evidence it requires.
03Current First Aid and CPR C
The City asks for valid certification from a recognized provider. Check expiry dates and keep the original documents ready for interview.
04DZ licence and driving record
The published criteria allow an unrestricted Ontario DZ licence to be obtained within six months of hire, at the candidate’s expense. The City also requires a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
05Document timing and screening
The posting describes abstract validity relative to hire, while the public FAQ requests a current abstract with the application. Follow the live upload instructions and refresh documents when requested. Police vulnerable-sector screening is part of selection.
06Community service and professional conduct
Show active community involvement, clear English communication, teamwork and willingness to follow instructions. Connect your experience to the City’s values of service, collaboration, care and courage.
03

What strengthens your application

The City identifies the following as preferred qualifications. Present the assets you actually hold and explain their relevance; they do not replace the entry requirements or guarantee selection.

Technical, prevention and education qualifications

The City guide identifies NFPA 1006 technical rescue, NFPA 1035 public education and NFPA 1031 inspection qualifications as assets. Explain how you have applied relevant training.

Education, trades and medical training

Preferred qualifications include paramedic education or equivalent, relevant post-secondary study and recognized trade certification. Describe practical responsibilities and transferable skills.

Firefighting and service experience

Considerable volunteer or career firefighting experience and paramilitary service appear among the preferred qualifications. Use accurate examples without disclosing confidential incident information.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Richmond Hill organizes its own written aptitude and practical selection stages. The City’s public guide describes the written format and topics without naming the publisher. CPS-style practice can develop relevant skills; use your invitation to confirm the actual test and administration.

WRITTEN APTITUDE

Two-hour multiple-choice assessment

The City’s 2025 guide describes decision making, coping with stress, professional responsibility, math, mechanics, logical ordering and interpersonal communication. It does not identify the test publisher, question count or a confirmed memory section. Follow your invitation for the current format.

PREPARATION

CPS-style practice with a clear distinction

Use original CPS-style practice questions to strengthen numerical and mechanical reasoning and judgment. Review why an answer was wrong, then solve a fresh question of the same type. The public City guide does not confirm a CPS edition, and practice scores do not establish the City’s pass mark.

PRACTICAL & TEAMWORK

Job ability testing at the fire training centre

The City describes job-related activities and team scenarios as a separate stage from the panel interview. Review the instructions, train progressively and practise technical tasks through qualified instruction. In group exercises, clarify responsibilities and contribute useful information without dominating the team.

PHYSICAL & MEDICAL

City-directed assessment at York University

After interviews, selected candidates are directed to an assessment at York University. Follow the City’s booking and medical instructions; do not assume an independently purchased OFAI or other certificate substitutes for this stage.

FEES & TEST DAY

Confirm the invitation before paying

The published guide lists no online application fee and $118.48 plus HST for testing if invited. It asks candidates to bring government-issued photo ID, an HB/No. 2 pencil and the invitation email. Fees and arrangements can change; verify the current instructions and plan to arrive early.

Written test preparation

Practise relevant firefighter aptitude skills

Use our original CPS practice questions for numerical and mechanical reasoning and judgment. Confirm the actual Richmond Hill test in your invitation; Firefighter Academy is independent and practice does not replace the City’s assessment.

Need the licence prerequisite?

Use original DZ practice questions alongside Ontario’s official truck and air-brake handbooks. Practice does not replace driver training, licensing or the City’s licence requirements.

The recruitment process

The City publishes seven typical recruitment stages. Candidates must succeed at each phase to remain under consideration. Use your own invitation for appointments, documents and any updated sequence.

  1. 1

    Online application

Submit through the City’s applicant system with the required qualification evidence.

The 2025 guide required one black-and-white PDF under 5 MB containing the application documents. Follow the live competition’s instructions.

  2. 2

    Written aptitude test

Selected eligible applicants receive their appointment details by email.

Check the administrator, format, fee, location and required identification. Do not book another department’s test on the assumption it will be accepted.

  3. 3

Practical assessment and job ability testing

Candidates meeting the written-test criteria advance to job activities and team scenarios at the training centre.

Listen to the task, work safely within your training and communicate with the group. The public guide does not publish every task or a scoring rubric.

  4. 4

    Formal interview(s)

A panel of fire chief officers and Human Resources uses structured assessment techniques.

Prepare behavioural, situational and position-knowledge answers. The reviewed material does not establish an MMI format.

  5. 5

    Physical and medical assessment

Selected candidates are contacted for the City-directed York University assessment.

Use the instructions you receive for booking, forms and attendance. Keep qualification records accessible throughout the process.

  6. 6

    Reference checks

With authorization, the City checks references to substantiate the information you supplied.

The guide asks for three relevant references, including two previous work supervisors. Obtain permission and verify current contact details.

  7. 7

    Final review and selection

The Selection Committee considers qualifications, suitability, skills, abilities and fit before extending offers.

Remaining shortlisted candidates may be retained for future opportunities. Pool membership is not a guaranteed job or start date.

How to prepare for Richmond Hill’s interviews

The City describes structured behavioural, situational and position-knowledge questions. Prepare real examples and a clear method for discussing unfamiliar situations. The following is independent preparation advice, not a published scoring rubric.

  • Behavioural answers: choose one event, explain your responsibility and decisions, describe the result and identify what you learned. Keep the background brief and spend most of the answer on your actions.
  • Situational answers: explain the concern you would address first, what information you need, who you would involve and how you would follow through. Stay within your training and authority.
  • Role knowledge: understand emergency response, equipment readiness, public education and station duties. Connect the City’s values to how you would treat residents and crew members.
  • Evidence and logistics: obtain permission from references and verify their details. Organize original credentials and the documents requested in your invitation. Practise out loud, check travel time and leave room for delays.

Original Firefighter Academy practice prompts — these are not Richmond Hill interview questions:

  • Equipment readiness: During a routine check, a teammate dismisses a concern you believe needs attention. How would you respond and follow the reporting process?
  • Learning from feedback: Describe a time you changed your approach after receiving difficult feedback. What did you do differently, and what improved?
  • Public service: A resident becomes frustrated during a fire-safety conversation. How would you listen, explain the safety purpose and keep the interaction respectful?

  • November 13, 2025, 11:59 p.m. — deadline for that application window.
  • October 29, 2026 review — the City’s fire employment page states that RHFES is not currently hiring.

Common questions

Guidance for Richmond Hill applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Richmond Hill hiring firefighters now?

The City’s fire employment page states that it is not currently hiring, as reviewed October 29, 2026. The reviewed 2025 candidate-pool application window is closed. Check the City’s careers system for a new active posting.

Does Richmond Hill use the CPS test?

The City’s official guide describes a two-hour written aptitude test without naming the publisher. CPS-style practice can help develop relevant skills, but it should not be treated as confirmation of the City’s test vendor or edition. Use your invitation for the actual test, timing and administration.

Is Richmond Hill’s firefighter interview an MMI?

The City describes structured panel interviews using behavioural, situational and position-knowledge questions. Practical team scenarios are a separate assessment stage. The reviewed public material does not establish an MMI format.

Do I need OFAI certificates?

The reviewed Richmond Hill pathway uses City-organized aptitude and practical testing, followed by City-directed assessment at York University. Follow the live posting and invitation rather than assuming another municipality’s OFAI certificate bundle will be accepted.

What is Richmond Hill firefighter pay?

The filed suppression grid effective July 1, 2025 lists first-class annual base pay of $116,995. Probationary pay is $64,347.25 for months 0–3 and $70,197 for months 4–12. These are dated published base rates; no successor 2026 salary rate was verified.

Do I need a DZ licence before applying?

The reviewed criteria allow an unrestricted Ontario DZ licence to be obtained within six months of hire, at the candidate’s expense. Provide the valid licence evidence requested by the application and confirm any updated conditions in the live posting.

Does joining the candidate pool guarantee a job?

No. The pool supports hiring as vacancies arise. Applicants still need to pass the selection process and receive an offer; a pool position does not guarantee an appointment or a particular start date.

How much does the application process cost?

The published guide lists no online application fee and a testing charge of $118.48 plus HST for candidates invited to advance. Confirm current fees and payment instructions, and budget separately for documentation, travel, licensing and other required assessments.

What documents should I prepare?

The 2025 guide required a single PDF under 5 MB with the résumé, cover letter and required qualification evidence. For interview, it requested original credentials and three relevant references, including two previous work supervisors. Use the live posting and invitation for the final document list and screening deadlines.
