How to become a Thorold firefighter

  1. 1

    Check credentials and certificate seals

Have clear copies of your education, NFPA and licensing documents ready. A course completion record is not always the same as the accredited certification requested.

  2. 2

    Confirm your FSO package

Ask FSO about previous results, renewals and the screening required for this competition. Track the ESR deadline separately from your testing appointment.

  3. 3

    Follow Thorold’s résumé order

The last posting requested formal education, work experience, professional qualifications and community involvement, in that order. Make each section easy to check.

01

The department at a glance

Thorold hires career firefighters for a department where full-time and volunteer crews work together. The 2026 career competition closed September 27. Its posting required FSO screening, including CPS aptitude testing, along with NFPA credentials, a DZ licence and current first aid. Use this guide to prepare, then check the next official posting before applying.

More than firefighting

Thorold’s three operating stations serve urban neighbourhoods, rural areas and communities along the Welland Canal. Station 1 houses career staff and volunteers; Stations 2 and 4 provide volunteer response. The Fire Master Plan describes rural water-supply work, tanker shuttle accreditation and the importance of fire prevention and public education. Learn how that mix shapes the department before an interview.

Pay & working pattern

First-class firefighter — July 2023 base, rounded · $108,332 per year

Effective July 1, 2023

Appendix A of the filed 2021–23 agreement lists first-class base pay of $108,331.56 from July 1, 2023, rounded above to $108,332. Probationary annual rates were $59,582.36 for the first six months and $64,998.94 after six months. These are historical rates; a newer salary settlement was not verified. Overtime, recognition pay and other additions are excluded.

The filed agreement describes a 24-hour suppression rotation averaging 42 hours a week over 28 days. Recruit training can follow a different schedule. Confirm your classification, training arrangements and current shift terms in the offer.

02

Minimum qualifications

The 2026 posting and checklist give the starting point below. Pay attention to certification seals, document timing and FSO validity rules; those details can decide whether a package is complete.

01Age, eligibility and education
Be at least 18, legally entitled to work in Canada, and hold an OSSD or equivalent.
02NFPA certification
Provide Firefighter I and II certification from a recognized accredited program, with the required IFSAC or Pro Board seals.
03First aid and CPR
The 2026 checklist required current Standard First Aid and CPR at minimum Level C. Check the next posting’s accepted certifications.
04DZ licence
Hold a valid Ontario Class D licence with Z endorsement, or an accepted equivalent.
05FSO screening
Provide the FSO certificate required by the competition. The last posting named CPS, clinical, medical, tread-water, acrophobia, CPAT and resiliency assessments.
06Conditional-offer checks and work qualities
A driver’s abstract dated within 30 days and a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check were required at conditional offer. The City also expects teamwork, prompt attention to instructions and a strong work ethic.
03

What strengthens your application

Thorold identifies several preferred qualifications. List the evidence clearly, including whether your experience was career, volunteer, part-time or seasonal.

Further qualifications

NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator certification, a university degree, college diploma, recognized trade certification and AEMCA designation are among the listed preferences. Include supporting copies where requested.

Practical experience

Explain suppression, construction, trades, mechanical, emergency medical, large-vehicle or fire-prevention experience. State what you actually did and whether it was full-time, part-time, seasonal or volunteer.

Community involvement

Describe your role and level of commitment. A regular responsibility is easier to assess when you show how often you contributed and whom the work served.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

The City’s posting names CPS through Firefighter Services of Ontario. It also requires physical, medical, water, heights and resiliency assessments. Book the package required for the actual recruitment and follow the action items in your FSO confirmation.

Written aptitude

CPS examination through FSO

Prepare with timed practice and careful review of mistakes. Use the current candidate instructions for the actual exam requirements; another department’s written-test process may differ.

Physical and suitability

CPAT, clinical, medical and acrophobia

Build fitness steadily and read the official assessment instructions before booking. Confirm required forms and appointment preparation directly with FSO.

Swimming and water confidence

FSO tread-water assessment

Thorold names a tread-water test. Practise water confidence and endurance, then check FSO’s current protocol. Do not assume an OFAI swim result replaces the required FSO assessment.

Timing and previous results

One appointment and separate ESR instructions

The 2026 posting specified successful completion of six tests in one day, with ESR completed by FSO’s separate deadline. Qualifying previous results could be reused with required updates. FSO must confirm eligibility and any expired assessments before you book.

Written test preparation

Prepare for the CPS aptitude exam

Use timed practice to find where you lose accuracy or spend too long. Review mistakes and repeat weaker topics. Firefighter Academy offers independent practice material; certification and official screening are handled by FSO.

05

The recruitment process

Thorold publishes clear screening and submission instructions, but the reviewed posting does not set out a complete interview sequence. The steps below explain how to prepare without assuming a fixed interview format.

  1. 1

Review the posting and book screening

Compare every requirement with your documents.

Register through FSO for the required package. Sessions can fill, so allow time for scheduling and any retests. Check the specific ESR instructions in your confirmation.

  2. 2

Complete testing and submit the application

Use the competition’s checklist and submission method.

The 2026 application deadline was September 27, with a $40 processing fee. FSO accepted packages in person or by mail, not email. Those are historical instructions; follow the next posting’s dates and method.

  3. 3

    Prepare for City selection

Be ready to explain your experience and judgment.

Build concise examples of teamwork, safety, communication, conflict and learning. Study the department’s service area and composite model. A fixed number of interviews, MMI format or question list was not established by the reviewed public posting.

  4. 4

    Complete conditional-offer requirements

Provide the requested checks within their date windows.

The last posting required a driver’s abstract issued within 30 days and a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check at the applicant’s expense. Obtain time-sensitive checks when instructed, and review all offer conditions.
