How to become a Vaughan firefighter

  1. 1

    Check eligibility before paying

Audit your NFPA certificates, DZ licence and current CPR against the latest posting. Resolve missing documents before a fee becomes non-refundable.

  2. 2

Build the application in the requested format

Vaughan’s 2026 package required one combined document and a prescribed resume order. Use the application checklist below as a starting point, then follow the new posting exactly.

  3. 3

    Train the four aptitude areas

Work on reading, math, mechanical reasoning and human relations. Check the provider, exam version, permitted tools and online setup in your invitation.

  4. 4

Prepare for the stages after the test

Keep fire-service skills, fitness and interview examples ready while in the pool. Track email, maintain current qualifications and update your candidate profile.

01

The department at a glance

Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service offers a career built around emergency response, public service and continuous training. This guide explains how to prepare for its firefighter recruitment process, from the application package and online aptitude test to skills assessment and final selection. Use the latest City posting and invitation as the authority for each new round; the 2026 campaign is a dated example, not an open application window.

More than firefighting

The role combines firefighting and rescue with first aid, public education, inspections, equipment care and station duties. Prepare examples that show safe judgement, reliable teamwork and respectful service to people from different backgrounds—not just an interest in emergency calls.

Pay & working pattern

First-class firefighter — estimated annual base · $123,494 per year

Effective July 1, 2026

Recruit training: approximately $67,922 annualized; fifth class: approximately $74,096. These are estimated July 2026 base rates. See the progression below for the calculation basis. Overtime and recognition pay are additional.

The 2026 requirements called for availability for 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. Consider the effect on sleep, commuting and family commitments before applying.

Vaughan firefighter salary and progression

Estimated first-class base pay is $123,494 per year at July 2026 rates. The progression below shows the earlier career steps. All amounts are annualized in Canadian dollars.

  • Recruit training — first 3 months: $67,922
  • Fifth class — remainder of first year: $74,096
  • Fourth class: $86,446
  • Third class: $98,795
  • Second class: $111,145
  • First class: $123,494

Calculated from the $109,385 first-class base (2023) and Ontario’s published 2024–2026 increases, assuming unchanged classification percentages. These annualized estimates exclude overtime and recognition pay; they are not earnings for the training period. Confirm the current grid and advancement rules with Vaughan.

02

Minimum qualifications

The following baseline reflects Vaughan’s official 2026 FAQ. Check every item against the next posting before paying a non-refundable fee. A course enrolment or preferred asset does not replace a minimum qualification.

01Work eligibility, English and education
The 2026 baseline required entitlement to work in Canada, clear oral and written English, and Grade 12 or a Ministry-approved equivalent.
02Firefighter certification
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels I and II, with an IFSAC and/or ProBoard seal or accepted proof of grandfathering. The 2026 FAQ allowed an OFM Learning Portal completion record at application while official certificates were pending; official certificates were required later.
03Hazardous materials operations
NFPA 472, 1072 or 470 Hazardous Materials Operations, with the required IFSAC/ProBoard certification or accepted grandfathering. Check the exact standard and evidence requested in the next campaign.
04Current CPR at the required level
The 2026 FAQ accepted a first-aid or CPR qualification that includes Level C CPR covering adults, children and infants. It had to be valid at application. Confirm the next posting’s wording and expiry rules.
05Unrestricted Ontario DZ licence
Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted DZ licence with air-brake endorsement. A satisfactory driver’s abstract is required before employment; disclose relevant licence, demerit and qualification changes when requested.
06Shift availability and screening
Be available for the required 24-hour shifts. Selected candidates must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check and original supporting documents at the specified later stage; the 2026 FAQ said the police check was not uploaded at initial application.
07Skills and fitness readiness
Selected applicants face a skills session and interview, followed by Vaughan-scheduled York University medical and fitness assessment at candidate expense. A previously obtained fitness certificate was not accepted for the 2026 process.
03

What strengthens your application

Vaughan distinguishes preferred experience from additional assets. Build a clear record of relevant work and sustained service; collecting short certificates alone is not the same as demonstrating readiness.

Preferred: operational fire experience

The 2026 FAQ gave preference to current career or part-time/volunteer firefighter employment. Describe your actual responsibilities, training and contribution accurately.

Preferred: pre-service education

An accredited pre-fire-service college diploma was preferred. It does not replace the required NFPA certification evidence.

Trades and medical experience

Recognized trade apprenticeship/certification and medical training or experience were listed assets. Show how you applied these skills to safe work, problem-solving and service.

Sustained community involvement

Vaughan valued consistent, current community service or volunteering within the previous two to three years. Explain your role, commitment and what you learned.

Relevant specialized qualifications

Other relevant training or experience can support the application. Vaughan specifically excluded short one-to-three-day third-party courses that do not result in NFPA certification from its 2026 asset criteria.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Prepare for the exam version named in your invitation. The 2026 official FAQ lists four aptitude areas and a US$50 fee. Candidate experience supplied to Firefighter Academy identifies CPS HR online testing through ProctorU, with human relations rather than a memory section. The City’s FAQ confirms the subject areas and virtual proctoring, but does not name the provider.

APTITUDE FORMAT

CPS HR online testing

The City’s 2026 FAQ confirms an online, third-party proctored test with a separate US$50 fee. Candidate experience identifies CPS HR through ProctorU. Treat that provider detail as recent reported experience, and use your invitation to confirm the current platform, deadline, duration and permitted equipment.

READING

Reading comprehension

Practise extracting the main point, following written directions and distinguishing evidence from an assumption. Work under time pressure, then explain why the other options are unsupported. These are preparation suggestions, not a claim about actual exam questions.

MATH

Mathematical ability

Review arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, units and practical word problems. Aim for an accurate setup before increasing speed. Do not assume a calculator is permitted; use the rules in the test invitation.

MECHANICAL

Mechanical reasoning

Refresh levers, pulleys, gears, forces and basic fluid principles. Sketch unfamiliar systems and reason about what changes when a force, load or direction changes. Use independent practice rather than recalled test content.

HUMAN RELATIONS

Teamwork and public service

The official subject is teamwork, public relations and community living—the human-relations area candidates often call HR. Practise choosing responses that protect safety, communicate respectfully, accept responsibility and support the crew. Memory is not listed among the four 2026 subjects.

REMOTE TEST SETUP

Prepare your online workspace

Use the equipment check and room instructions supplied by the proctoring provider. Confirm accepted ID, camera and microphone requirements, internet reliability, time zone and permitted materials early. Resolve accessibility arrangements through the official process before the appointment.

LATER ASSESSMENT

Skills, interview and York fitness

The 2026 model included about eight skills stations and one group station, plus an interview. The later York assessment covered medical review, maximal treadmill/aerobic testing and job simulations: confined-space tolerance, a height/ladder task, hose carry with stairs, rope pull, hose advance, ladder lift, victim drag and forced entry. Follow the current assessment instructions for exact tasks and standards. Attend the assessment Vaughan schedules; an OFAI, CPAT or earlier York result should not be assumed to substitute.

Written test preparation

Practise the skills Vaughan assesses

Use targeted CPS practice to identify weak areas, then review the reasoning behind your mistakes. Match your final preparation to the sections and rules in your own test invitation. Practice material is independent and is not an official Vaughan exam.

Need the licence prerequisite?

Vaughan’s recent requirements called for an unrestricted Ontario DZ licence. Review road knowledge and air-brake concepts alongside the practical training and licensing steps you need.

05

The recruitment process

Vaughan’s 2026 FAQ describes six stages. The applicant pool can remain active for about two years or until another recruitment drive; passing the aptitude threshold does not guarantee an interview or a vacancy. Treat the sequence below as the recent model and follow any updated instructions.

  1. 1

    Application and payment

Submit the City application and fee receipt.

The 2026 fee was C$151 plus HST, paid through PerfectMind before applying through the City’s employment portal. Paying alone does not submit an application. Retain both payment and application confirmations.

  2. 2

    Online aptitude test

    Complete the invited third-party examination.

The 2026 FAQ listed four subjects and a US$50 test fee. Watch your email for registration instructions and follow the deadline, identity checks and proctoring rules.

  3. 3

    Applicant pool

Meeting the threshold gives eligibility for consideration.

The 2026 pool lasted approximately two years or until the next drive. Entry did not guarantee an interview. Update your candidate profile as qualifications and relevant experience change, and reapply for future postings.

  4. 4

    Skills session and interview

    Selected candidates demonstrate their readiness.

The 2026 FAQ described approximately eight skills stations and one group station, assessing fire-service knowledge and skills, with an interview. Practise clear communication, safe task execution and examples of your own contribution to a team.

  5. 5

    Short list and verification

Complete Vaughan’s scheduled medical, fitness and checks.

The 2026 model required York University medical and firefighter fitness assessment at candidate expense, satisfactory references, an MTO abstract and a Vulnerable Sector Check. Previous fitness certificates were not accepted. Obtain time-sensitive documents when instructed.

  6. 6

    Final review and selection

Offers depend on vacancies and current eligibility.

Vaughan assessed applications, aptitude results, skills/interview performance and references. The 2026 FAQ made offers conditional on a vacancy and a current York fitness certificate. Candidates not offered a position could return to the applicant pool.

Application package and recruitment costs

The 2026 instructions required one combined upload containing the fee receipt, resume, NFPA 1001 Level II evidence, hazardous-materials operations evidence and valid Level C CPR qualification. The resume order was education, current work experience going back no more than 15 years, certifications/qualifications, then community service/volunteerism. A cover letter was not requested. Assemble a readable package and follow the next posting’s file and formatting rules rather than recycling an application unchanged.

For that round, the City charged C$151 plus HST for the application and the online aptitude test cost US$50 separately. PerfectMind handled payment, not job applications: return to Employment Opportunities to apply and include the receipt. Keep both confirmations and enable recruitment emails. The March 31, 2027 City Hall event on the fee confirmation was a payment-system placeholder, not a test appointment. Later York testing, police checks and other requested documents were also at candidate expense; confirm current fees and wait for official scheduling instructions.

Vaughan recruitment history and next intake

The official 2026 recruitment FAQ identifies the application period as August 4–25, 2026 for campaign J0726-0428. That window is closed. At this guide’s October 28, 2026 review, no future application window was verified. The City’s general page still describes the 2026 drive as active; that does not mean new applications are open after the FAQ deadline. Use the actual posting and City notices to check application status.

The 2026 process provided for a pool lasting approximately two years or until the next recruitment drive, with candidates selected as positions became available. Vaughan also announced the graduation of 16 new firefighters on January 17, 2026; a graduation is evidence of an earlier intake, not a forecast of another posting. Prepare while waiting, keep your candidate profile current, and reapply when a new campaign opens. No annual or winter hiring schedule is promised here.

Common questions

Guidance for Vaughan applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Vaughan currently accepting firefighter applications?

The official 2026 FAQ gives an August 4–25 application window, which is closed. No future application window was verified at the October 28, 2026 review. The City’s general careers page may still call the 2026 drive active while later selection continues; check the actual job posting before trying to apply.

Does Vaughan use the CPS HR test or a memory test?

Recent candidate experience identifies CPS HR online through ProctorU, with human relations rather than memory. The official 2026 FAQ confirms reading, math, mechanical reasoning, and teamwork/public relations/community living. It does not identify the provider by name. Follow your invitation if the next format changes.

How much did the Vaughan application and test cost?

For the 2026 round, the official application fee was C$151 plus HST and the separately paid online aptitude test was US$50. The application fee was non-refundable for a submitted application. Budget separately for currency conversion, later York testing and any documents requested; recheck all prices next time.

Does paying through PerfectMind complete my application?

No. PerfectMind was the fee-payment portal. Applicants then had to return to the City’s Employment Opportunities portal, submit the application and upload the receipt with the requested documents. The 2026 FAQ said to disregard the March 31, 2027 City Hall event shown on the payment confirmation.

Do I need OFAI certificates to apply to Vaughan?

The 2026 FAQ did not list an OFAI certificate package as an initial application requirement. It specified its own aptitude process and a later Vaughan-scheduled York University medical and fitness assessment. Do not assume another department’s OFAI, CPAT or fitness requirements apply; check the next posting.

What happens during Vaughan’s skills and interview stage?

The 2026 FAQ described approximately eight skills stations and one group station, plus an interview, for candidates selected from the pool. It did not provide a complete station-by-station syllabus or a specific interview format. Prepare fire-service fundamentals and evidence of safe teamwork, and follow the invitation.

Can I use a York fitness certificate I already have?

Not for the process described in the 2026 FAQ. Selected candidates had to attend the specific medical and fitness assessment scheduled by Vaughan; previous test certificates were not accepted. Wait for instructions before paying for an assessment you expect Vaughan to accept.

Must I upload a Vulnerable Sector Check when I apply?

The 2026 FAQ said no: selected candidates would be told to provide it during the final stages. Know how to obtain the check, but follow Vaughan’s timing for a current check and driver’s abstract.

What if my NFPA certificate is pending or from outside Ontario?

The 2026 FAQ accepted an OFM Learning Portal record of successful completion during application, with official sealed certificates required later. It also said properly acquired ProBoard and IFSAC certificates from another province or the United States are accepted reciprocally in Ontario. Confirm your specific evidence against the current posting.

What does a Vaughan recruit earn?

Using the published 2023 agreement base and province-reported increases gives a July 1, 2026 first-class estimate of about C$123,494 a year. The published candidate rate is 55% during the three-month recruit program, about C$67,922 annualized, followed by 60% fifth class, about C$74,096 annualized. These are calculated estimates; the salary section explains the assumptions.
