01

The department at a glance

Woodstock’s 2026 posting required current OFAI Stage One and Two certificates and explicitly said Stage Three was not required. Start there when checking your test results; do not assume you need the same package as a neighbouring department. The competition closed May 15, 2026. This guide uses it as a preparation reference, with links to current City vacancies. Keep your certificates and application ready, but recheck every requirement when a new firefighter posting appears.

More than firefighting

Woodstock Fire Department operates two stations and trains for a broad range of emergencies. Firefighters handle suppression, rescue, hazardous materials and patient care, alongside inspections, public education and apparatus and equipment maintenance.

Pay & working pattern

First-class firefighter — published 2024 base · $111,546 per year

Effective January 1, 2024

The City’s 2024 budget gives first-class base pay of $111,546. The 2026 recruitment posting quoted $66,927 for the probationary role and explicitly labelled it a 2024 rate. The budget describes progression from 60% through 70%, 80% and 90% before first class. These are dated figures; a newer salary scale has not been verified. Overtime and benefits are separate.

The reference posting described weekday daytime work for up to the first eight weeks, then a 24-hour rotating shift once assigned. Check the next advertisement and offer for your training schedule.

02

Minimum qualifications

The following reflects the City’s 2026 probationary posting. Use the complete employer text for details, and check the next intake for changes to qualification or health-document requirements.

01Age, work eligibility and education
Applicants had to be at least 18, legally entitled to work in Canada and hold an Ontario high school diploma or equivalent.
02NFPA 1001 I and II
The posting required certification from an accredited program at a recognised institution, with IFSAC or Pro Board seals. Course attendance alone is not the requested certification proof.
03DZ licence
A valid DZ driver’s licence was required. Check any additional driving-record instructions in the live posting or offer.
04First Aid and CPR
The reference posting required current Standard First Aid, within three years, plus valid Basic Rescuer CPR Level C or better. Check each credential’s expiry rather than assuming they renew together.
05OFAI testing
Valid, current CTS Stage One and Two certificates were required. The posting expressly said Stage Three was not required.
06Physical and vision requirements
Applicants had to be capable of essential duties. The posting’s vision standard was 20/30 corrected or 20/40 uncorrected, both eyes tested together, without significant colour-vision abnormalities, assessed through Stage Two.
07Screening and health records
The posting required the ability to satisfy criminal/vulnerable-sector screening and proof of listed immunizations, including measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus/diphtheria, hepatitis B and COVID-19. Check the current employer wording and document instructions.
03

What strengthens your application

These were assets in the reference posting, rather than substitutes for the required certificates. Show both the qualification and an example of using it.

Community and practical experience

Community service and civilian or military experience in suppression, construction, trades, mechanical work, medical care, large vehicles or prevention were identified as assets.

Further education and medical training

A degree, diploma, recognised trade certificate or EMCA designation could strengthen the application. Explain how the learning relates to your work.

Instruction and computer skills

First Aid, CPR or AED instructor credentials, administrative skills and computer experience were assets. AED certification was also identified as useful.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

Woodstock’s reference requirement is OFAI Stage One and Two. Stage Three was explicitly excluded. Keep the employer’s test list separate from OFAI’s wider assessment pathway.

Stage One

FACT written assessment

FACT is OFAI’s aptitude and character assessment. Use the official guide to understand the format, then practise under time limits and review why errors happened.

Stage Two

Hearing, vision and treadmill screening

OFAI Stage Two uses separate hearing, vision and treadmill components. Review current provider instructions and make sure the evidence meets Woodstock’s certificate-validity requirements.

Other assessments

Follow the City’s invitation

The reference posting excludes Stage Three but does not publish a complete list of any later City assessments. Keep fitness and practical skills current and follow invitations for additional testing, documents and interview details.

Written test preparation

Prepare for the FACT written assessment

Use timed practice to find the reading, arithmetic or other written skills that need work. Read the current OFAI candidate guide for the assessment instructions.

The recruitment process

Use this preparation order alongside the employer’s instructions. The public posting does not set out a complete scored selection sequence or confirm a particular interview format.

  1. 1

    Read the live posting

Confirm the vacancy, closing time and all required credentials. Save the full text before beginning your application.

  2. 2

    Prepare one readable PDF package

The reference posting requested résumé and supporting documents in one PDF, organised as formal education, work experience, professional qualifications and community involvement.

Complete any additional fields requested by the application portal.

  3. 3

    Submit through City careers

Upload the final package and complete the application fields. Confirm that the submission went through and retain your copy.

Follow the employer’s stated support instructions if an upload fails.

  4. 4

Prepare for the City’s selection steps

Monitor your email and use clear examples of teamwork, public service, safe decisions and learning from experience.

The City says only those selected for an initial interview are contacted. A fixed MMI format has not been verified.

  5. 5

Complete checks and start training if appointed

Provide the requested screening and qualification evidence and read the offer carefully. Plan for the recruit-training hours before the shift assignment.

The dates in an older competition are not guaranteed dates for the next class.

Common questions

Guidance for Woodstock applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Woodstock hiring firefighters now?

The reference posting closed May 15, 2026. Check the City career page for a new vacancy. A dated job page that remains online should not be treated as a fresh opening.

Does Woodstock require OFAI Stage Three?

The 2026 employer posting explicitly said Stage Three was not required. It asked for current Stage One and Two certificates. Recheck the next posting rather than buying the full package automatically.

Which written test does Woodstock use?

The reference posting required OFAI Stage One, which is FACT. Use OFAI’s official candidate guide and keep written-test preparation separate from the Stage Two screening requirements.

Is a swim certificate required?

The reference qualification list did not name an OFAI swim certificate. That does not establish what a future intake or later City assessment will require. Follow the current posting and invitation for any swimming requirement.

How should I organise my application?

The reference posting asked for résumé and supporting documents as one PDF, in this order: formal education, work experience, professional qualifications and community involvement. Check the new portal instructions and make every scan readable.

How much do Woodstock firefighters earn?

The City’s published 2024 first-class base is $111,546 annually. Its 2026 posting quoted $66,927 probationary pay, labelled as a 2024 rate. Those figures are historical references; a newer scale has not been verified here.

Can additional experience replace a required certificate?

Do not assume it can. The posting distinguishes mandatory qualifications from assets such as trade, emergency-service, instructor and community experience. Submit the certification evidence the employer requests.
