How to become a Ajax firefighter

  1. 1

    Check qualifications before applying

Have every required certificate already completed. For the November 2026 competition, OFAI Stages 1–3 and swimming must stay valid through November 8.

  2. 2

    Prepare the right application package

Submit your cover letter and resume through the Town’s portal. Keep certificate PDFs ready for the later verification request rather than sending an unsolicited application by email.

  3. 3

    Read the four-year condition

Before accepting an offer, understand which equipment and training costs Ajax may require you to repay if you leave within your first four years.

01

The department at a glance

Thinking about a firefighter career in Ajax? Start by checking your NFPA certification, OFAI records, first aid, BLS and DZ licence. Ajax uses a multi-stage selection process, and meeting the minimum requirements is only the beginning. This guide brings the application steps and practical preparation advice together so you can see what to work on next. The current competition, JR100539, advertises six probationary firefighter positions and closes November 8, 2026. It also includes a four-year reimbursement condition for firefighters who leave early. Read that section before deciding whether this is the right long-term move for you.

More than firefighting

Ajax firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle incidents and specialized rescues, while helping protect property and the environment. Between calls, crews train, maintain apparatus and equipment, look after the station and take part in public education. The Town’s three fire stations serve a community stretching from Lake Ontario’s waterfront to neighbourhoods north of Highway 401. Teamwork, clear communication and respectful service matter on every shift.

Pay & working pattern

Advertised maximum — October 2026 posting · $134,499 per year

Effective October 26, 2026

The official posting advertises $74,036–$134,499 annually. $134,499 is the top of that advertised range, not a separately verified first-class rate. The date shown refers to the October 26, 2026 employer announcement on OAFC; the posting does not specify a separate wage-grid effective date. Confirm your starting classification and progression in the offer.

The current posting describes full-time, 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays, under the Ajax Professional Firefighters’ Association. It lists benefits, paid leave, parental-leave top-up, employee and family support, wellness programs and OMERS pension participation. Confirm individual benefits and employment terms in your offer.

The four-year reimbursement condition

This is worth understanding before you accept an offer. The current posting says firefighters who leave employment with Ajax within their first four years must reimburse the Town for reasonable costs associated with station uniforms, dress uniforms, bunker gear, personal protective equipment, and course enrolment and certification fees. The posting gives no dollar total, repayment scale or exceptions. It does not say that the amount reduces each year, or that returning equipment removes the obligation. Before signing, ask HR for the written agreement, the costs that can be charged, how they are calculated, and the circumstances in which repayment applies. Get those answers in writing so you understand the commitment. This summary describes the published condition; it is not a determination of what a particular agreement would require or whether it would be enforceable.

Ajax firefighter salary and benefits

The official October 2026 posting advertises a compensation range of $74,036–$134,499 for the probationary firefighter competition. It does not assign each endpoint to a rank or publish the full progression grid. We have therefore kept the advertised range rather than labelling its maximum as first-class pay or its minimum as a confirmed probationary rate. Ask for the current classification schedule and the rate that would apply when you start. The posting also lists paid leave, parental-leave top-up, employee and family assistance, wellness benefits and OMERS pension participation. Benefit eligibility and pay progression are governed by the applicable employment terms.

02

Minimum qualifications

The November 2026 competition is the best reference for the current intake. It lists NFPA 1001 I/II and OFAI Stages 1–3 plus swimming together. The Town’s general webpage uses different “or” wording; do not treat that as an exemption from the current posting. Required certifications must already be held at application.

01Education and work eligibility
Hold Grade 12 or equivalent and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Keep your education and eligibility records ready for verification.
02NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II
The current posting requires successful completion of NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2, with IFSAC and/or Pro Board certification. It lists this alongside the OFAI requirements.
03OFAI Stages 1–3 and swimming
For the November 2026 intake, all parts must be current and valid through November 8, 2026. Stage One is FACT. The posting does not limit Stage Three to FPAT only; check the full OFAI component list.
04Standard First Aid and CPR-BLS
The posting requires up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR-BLS. Its certificate-date line refers to SFA issued in 2024 and CPR issued in July 2026, but the sentence is incomplete. If your dates differ, get clarification rather than assuming acceptance or rejection.
05Unrestricted Ontario DZ licence
The current posting lists a valid, unrestricted licence of at least Class DZ. Proof and a clear driver’s abstract are requested when an offer is made. It also says required certifications must be held at application; a later document check is not an extension to obtain the qualification.
06Communication, teamwork and shift readiness
Communicate fluently in English, work well with others and provide good customer service. Be ready for sustained physical, mental and emotional demands and 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
07Satisfactory vulnerable-sector check
The Town requires a current criminal reference check including vulnerable-sector screening before the start date. The 2026 posting’s later selection instructions specify a check issued no earlier than March 19, 2027, submitted with the signed offer. Follow the Town’s request rather than ordering it too early.
03

What strengthens your application

These are additional assets named in the current posting. Make them easy to find in your resume and keep supporting records ready. An asset strengthens an application; it does not replace a missing minimum qualification.

Active firefighting experience

The posting names experience with a municipal, military, federal or industrial service. Explain your responsibilities and give examples of safe work, teamwork and learning.

Specialized rescue and operations training

Ajax lists rope, ice/water and other technical rescue, vehicle extrication, firefighter survival, rapid intervention, pumper and aerial operations beyond the pre-service program. Separate completed qualifications from courses you plan to take.

EMR, pump and public-education qualifications

Named assets include EMR, NFPA 1002 apparatus equipped with a fire pump, and NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator I or II. Keep certificates and relevant examples ready.

Computer and additional language skills

The Town lists demonstrated computer skills and fluency in a second language or sign language. Describe how you have used those skills to communicate clearly or help others.

04

Aptitude & physical testing

For this competition, valid OFAI Stages 1–3 and swimming are entry requirements. Stage One is FACT. Ajax also says written, oral, practical and psychological testing form part of selection. Those later assessments should not be assumed to be the same as the OFAI certificates.

WRITTEN CERTIFICATE

FACT through OFAI Stage One

FACT is the written assessment within OFAI Stage One. The current Ajax competition requires that certificate, along with the other listed OFAI stages and swimming. Prepare the reading, math, map-reading, writing and personal-characteristics components using the current OFAI guidance.

OFAI PHYSICAL AND CLINICAL

Stages Two, Three and swimming

Check the component list and expiry date on every certificate. Do not assume that a department accepting expired FACT elsewhere means Ajax accepts it, or that Ajax requires FPAT only. This posting requires valid Stages 1–3 and swimming through its stated deadline.

TOWN SELECTION TESTING

Further assessments may follow

Ajax says written, oral, practical and psychological testing will form part of selection. The posting does not identify the publisher of the Town’s later written assessment, its question count, a passing score or a full practical event list. Your invitation provides those details.

INTERVIEW PREPARATION

Prepare examples and scenarios

An MMI format is not confirmed in the reviewed posting. Practise explaining teamwork, service, safe decisions, receiving feedback and handling pressure. For practical testing, listen to the briefing and work within the assessment’s safety instructions.

Written test preparation

Prepare for the FACT written assessment

Work through reading, math, map-reading, writing and personal-characteristics preparation. Our original FACT practice questions can help you identify skills to improve; OFAI’s current candidate instructions explain the assessment itself.

Try FACT practice questions

Need the licence prerequisite?

Practise Class D, air-brake and road-sign questions alongside Ontario’s official handbooks. The full licensing process includes more than the written tests.

05

The recruitment process

The posting explains application screening and qualification checks, then identifies written, oral, practical and psychological assessments. It does not publish a complete order, scoring breakdown or event schedule. The stages below explain what is known and how to prepare; follow each invitation for the actual sequence.

  1. 1

    Apply through the Town’s portal

For the current competition, submit your cover letter and resume only by November 8, 2026. Save the confirmation email. Applications emailed through third-party job boards are not accepted.

Use the next posting for any future document-upload requirements; this instruction describes JR100539.

  2. 2

    Application screening

The selection committee screens the application against the minimum qualifications. Make each requirement easy to find and describe relevant assets with specific examples.

The posting says applicants still obtaining required certifications will not be considered.

  3. 3

    Provide qualification PDFs when requested

Selected candidates receive an HR email asking for copies of their qualifications. Respond by the stated deadline and submit readable PDFs.

Missing, late or invalid records can end your participation. Check your inbox and spam folder regularly.

  4. 4

    Complete invited assessments

Prepare for the written, oral, practical and psychological assessments identified by the Town. Read each invitation for the order, location, equipment, permitted aids and documents.

The public posting does not confirm a detailed assessment timetable or scoring breakdown.

  5. 5

Review the offer and employment conditions

Provide the requested driving and vulnerable-sector records, and review the four-year reimbursement terms before signing. Confirm the start date, pay classification and remaining conditions with HR.

The posting places qualification checks and employment conditions at different points; follow the written offer and candidate instructions.

  6. 6

    Complete recruit training

Ajax says all firefighters complete an in-depth training program before platoon assignment and continue training throughout their careers. Arrive ready to learn, ask questions and contribute to the crew.

The Town describes EMR, breathing apparatus, driving, pump/aerial operations, rescue and practical fireground training among its topics; no recruit-course duration was verified.

Prepare for the interview and practical stages

Build a short bank of examples: working with a crew, helping someone understand a safety message, receiving feedback, resolving disagreement and making a safe decision under pressure. Explain the situation briefly, spend most of your answer on your actions, and finish with the result and what you learned. Connect your examples to the professionalism, compassion, teamwork and respect Ajax names in its posting. For a scenario, identify the immediate priorities, explain how you would communicate and say when you would ask for help. Review the training and qualifications you claim in your application, and be ready to explain how you used them. Original practice prompts: Tell us about a time you changed your approach after feedback. How would you help a teammate who was unfamiliar with an assigned task? These are our practice prompts, not Ajax interview questions.

Common questions

Guidance for Ajax applicants. Confirm details with the referenced official sources and current posting.

Is Ajax hiring firefighters now?

As of October 31, 2026, the Town’s official posting JR100539 advertises six probationary firefighter positions, closing November 8, 2026. OAFC specifies 11:59 p.m. Apply through the Town’s portal and recheck the posting for changes.

Does Ajax require the FACT test?

For the November 2026 competition, yes: the posting requires valid OFAI Stages 1–3 and swimming, and Stage One is FACT. The Town also lists later written selection testing without naming its publisher, so do not assume the certificate and later assessment are the same test.

Can I apply with NFPA 1001 instead of OFAI certificates?

The current competition lists NFPA 1001 Firefighter I/II and OFAI certificates together. The general fire-services webpage has different “or” wording, but it should not be read as permission to skip a requirement in the active posting.

Can my OFAI certificates be expired?

The November 2026 posting requires all listed OFAI parts to remain valid through November 8, 2026. It does not state that expired FACT certificates are accepted. Check the dates on each record before applying.

What is Ajax’s four-year reimbursement condition?

The posting says firefighters who leave employment within their first four years must reimburse reasonable costs for station and dress uniforms, bunker gear, PPE, and course enrolment and certification fees. It does not publish an amount, a repayment scale or exceptions. Ask for the written terms before accepting an offer.

How much do Ajax firefighters earn?

The official October 2026 posting advertises a compensation range of $74,036–$134,499. It does not map the endpoints to a complete probationary-to-first-class grid or give a separate wage-effective date. Confirm your classification and progression in the current agreement or offer.

Do I send all certificates with my application?

The current competition asks for a cover letter and resume only at the initial application stage. Selected applicants are then asked to email qualification copies in PDF format. You must already hold required certifications when applying; a later document request is not extra time to earn them.

Does Ajax use MMI interviews?

The reviewed posting says oral testing forms part of selection but does not confirm an MMI format, station count or answer time. Practise clear examples and scenario responses, then follow your invitation.

When should I obtain my vulnerable-sector check?

The 2026 posting says the check submitted with the signed offer must be issued no earlier than March 19, 2027. Keep that campaign-specific timing in mind and wait for the Town’s instructions before paying for an early check.

Do I need DZ before applying?

The posting lists a valid, unrestricted licence of at least Class DZ and says required certifications must be held at application. Proof of the licence and a clear abstract are requested at the offer stage. Do not assume the later proof request means you can apply without the qualification.
