Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire/rescue incidents and provide pre-hospital emergency medical care.
  • Engage in fire prevention and public education initiatives.
  • Conduct fire inspections and other assigned duties.
  • Perform minor maintenance of apparatus, small equipment, and facilities.
  • Manage call taking and dispatching for emergency and non-emergency personnel.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
  • Current CPR BLS
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II
  • NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Valid Class 3 Driver's License
  • Air brake endorsement
  • Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status
  • Proof of Grade 12, equivalent or better
  • Driver’s Abstract with no more than six points in the last three years
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within last 6 months)
  • Ability to operate communications equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education completion
  • Apprenticeship or trade certification
  • PCP or ACP certification
  • NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (recommended)
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Volunteer work in the community
  • Demonstrated experience as a firefighter
  • Knowledge of City of Iqaluit's geography, including streets and hazards
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles
  • Ability to operate communications equipment
