FACT — OFAI Stage One

Toronto lists FACT as OFAI Stage One. It currently accepts expired Stage One certificates; Stage Two assessments and Stage Three FPAT have their own validity rules. Check each component before booking or renewing a certificate.

FACT — OFAI Stage One · Further Town written assessment — publisher not named

career recruitment

Ajax’s November 2026 competition requires NFPA 1001 Firefighter I/II plus valid OFAI Stages 1–3 and swimming through November 8, 2026. Stage One is FACT. The Town also lists later written selection testing without naming its publisher. The general webpage’s alternative-pathway wording does not override this competition’s requirements.

Firefighter aptitude tests explained

FACT, CPS and NTN describe written assessments or exam families. OFAI and FSO also provide other assessments, so a request for their physical-testing certificates doesn’t automatically tell you which written test you’ll take.

FACT

The Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) is published by FPSI. In Ontario it is commonly administered through OFAI as Stage One of Candidate Testing Services. The OFAI assessment has 110 multiple-choice items in up to three hours: reading, mathematical reasoning, map reading, writing and personal characteristics. Department notes explain whether FACT is required, accepted as an alternative, or conditional on your qualification pathway.

CPS

CPS firefighter aptitude tests are published by CPS HR Consulting. Firefighter Services of Ontario (FSO) administers the CPS Firefighter Entry-Level examination, covering oral information, reading, mathematical ability and mechanical aptitude. Other CPS deliveries can use different sections: our Vaughan guide documents online CPS HR testing through ProctorU with human relations. Match your preparation to the format in your invitation.

NTN

NTN publishes both FireTEAM and the separate Firefighter Express exam. FireTEAM uses video-based human-relations and mechanical material. Express uses written situational-judgement scenarios and image-based mechanical questions, alongside reading, math and a Role Fitness Questionnaire. An NTN vendor reference alone does not identify the version booked for a recruitment.

FPSI / NFST

FPSI supplies several firefighter assessments. Vancouver’s reviewed guide links an NFST orientation guide and includes technical fire knowledge; Halifax’s reviewed guide names an FPSI online entry-level test. Sharing a publisher does not make these the same exam or establish that every FPSI assessment is FACT.

BL Associates

BL Associates psychometric assessments screen aptitudes and personal characteristics for participating departments. They are distinct from OFAI FACT, FSO aptitude testing, physical assessments and later clinical suitability screening. Follow the recruiting department’s current component and score-transfer instructions.

Other assessment routes

Some departments arrange their own selection assessments or publish a written-test requirement without naming an exam family. The entries below describe the available recruitment information. Where the test is named only in a candidate invitation, use that invitation to select the relevant preparation.

Common questions

Which fire departments use the FACT?

Toronto, Markham and other Ontario departments use FACT through OFAI Stage One. Some require it, while others accept it as an alternative or as part of a qualification pathway. Choose the FACT filter, then read your department’s entry for the conditions.

What is the difference between the FACT and the CPS test?

FACT is published by FPSI and commonly delivered through OFAI in Ontario. It covers reading, math, maps, writing and personal characteristics. CPS HR publishes separate firefighter exams whose sections vary by version. The test name and delivery instructions matter more than the department’s use of physical-testing certificates.

Can I use an expired OFAI Stage One certificate?

Some departments, such as Toronto and Oakville's documented 2026 recruitment, accept expired Stage One certificates. Other stages have their own validity rules, and policies can change between competitions.

How do I find out which test my department uses?

Search for your city and read the assessment name, recruitment stream and linked sources. Your candidate invitation may provide details that aren’t in the public posting. If the test still isn’t named, ask the recruitment team before buying test-specific preparation.
